A Visa would be still valid.

An extension of stay would finish on the day your employment finished

It depends.

A visa is not cancelled, but an extension of stay based on employment is cancelled when you lose your job.

So if you got an extension of stay from immigration, you need to cancel your work permit and go to immigration to have your extension of stay cancelled the day you lose your job. You can get an extra 7 days to leave the country for 1,900 baht.

The thing is they have not yet settled my dues. However i think they are already cancelling the WP.

I am actually on a re entry permit as i did go out to singapore. When i checked with a visa firm they said immigration will just let the visa/extension for stay run ita course.

It has confused me. Dont want to be on overstay. Im sri lankan and cannot do border runs.

Any advice pls

Although immigration may not chase you down; (at least in the past but new procedure is to have you sign understanding paper during extension process of need to cancel extension immediately), if you are on an extension of stay and reason ends you must immediately leave Thailand to avoid being overstay or obtain a 7 days to leave by application for extension of stay at cost of 1,900 baht. This may also be a reason to turn you around at an exit point and prevent your departure if they notice. If you are on a 90 day stay not an issue but if an extension of stay it immediately ends. If you have unsettled issues you need to make it official and obtain extension of stay to fight it - understand labor does try to be fair to employees and many do obtain help.

Is the extension of stay annulled automatically in the computer systems of immigration once a work permit holder loses his job? Or what? I also had this question in my mind for some time now. Will he be pulled over when he tried to leave? Even though his extension of stay in passport is still valid and not been cancelled by him.

Some labor offices have been reported as sending a fax or message to immigration informing them that a work permit has been cancelled.

Even though his extension of stay in passport is still valid and not been cancelled by him.

But if the reason for extension had ended the extension is not valid and you sign a paper of understanding that when you obtain an extension of stay these days. It may not be strictly enforced if not noticed but it is the law so if you break it you do so at your risk.

Yeah Ethically you are right. But practically, I hardly doubt that your extension of stay becomes invalid automatically unless you visit immigration and cancel it by yourself.

There have been many a person that got a rather unpleasant surprise when they were leaving the country when they were informed by immigration that their extension had been canceled and they were on overstay.

Any problems regarding getting paid you should report to the labour office, they are there to help you and will take action on your behalf.

Are there any posts in this forum or on the web reflecting this experience?

I have seen several reports of turn around at border crossings on this forum for those who have failed to obtain official cancel stamp of extensions of stay.

If you are on an extension of stay I suggest you take a document showing that your work has ended and have extension cancelled, pay overstay if due, and get a 7 day extension to leave the country.

You could also just try leaving the country for a visa exempt re-entry (if qualified) or go to a nearby embassy or consulate for a tourist visa.
