Samsung Announce The Galaxy Grand

Featured Replies

Depends on the price point but this is poor resolution but will come in a Dual SIM version.

Samsung has taken the wraps off the Galaxy Grand, a smartphone with a giant five-inch screen but a low resolution usually found on smaller handsets.

The Android 'Jelly Bean' 4.1.2-toting Galaxy Grand was revealed on Tuesday in a blog post, in which Samsung confirmed a device previously known from FCC filings as the 'Baffin'. samsung-galaxy-grand-620x380.jpg?hash=AwDmAQEyMT&upscale=1Samsung Galaxy Grand (Image credit: Samsung)

The Galaxy Grand has WVGA resolution, providing 480 x 800 pixels. This is a common resolution for devices with four-inch screens, but phones with larger screens, such as Samsung's flagship Galaxy S3, tend to offer resolutions more in the region of 720 x 1280 pixels. This means the Galaxy Grand will have a very low pixel density.

Inside, the Galaxy Grand is resolutely mid-range. It has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor but is able to run many of the Samsung-only features found in more high-end devices such as the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. These include Samsung Hubs, pop-up video, direct call and S Voice.

The first version of the Galaxy Grand to hit the shelves will be a dual-SIM iteration, most likely aimed at travellers. A single-SIM version will follow.

The handset will have an 8-megapixel camera, DLNA, a 2,100mAh battery and HSPA+21Mbps mobile broadband connectivity. It will have just 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM, although the inclusion of a microSD slot makes storage less of an issue.

Pricing and release dates have not been revealed.

My eyesight is <deleted> so I couldn't care about screen resolution

Same specs as the I-mobile IQ5 that costs 6,500bht

Does that run Jellybean?

Not yet.. But probably will by the time this SaMSUNG IS RELEASED. Also going on Samsungs track record on upgrading their older handsets...2010/2011 handsets and tabs still on 2.3... this may not go further than JB.

Not nearly.

If find the I-mobile products to be extremely good value for money, but we do have to compare apples with apples.

Just a few of the differences at first sight:

IQ5 has 1Ghz cpu vs 1.2 Ghz for Samsung

512 MB ram vs 1 GB ram

4GB storage VS 8GB storage

7.2 Mbps hsdpa VS 21Mbps hsdpa

But as posted before, it'll depend a lot on price obviously.

I think this product is positioned as a value/budget version of the SGS3, although it can be challenging to fit the myriad Samsung Galaxy models into a cohesive map sometimes.

Maybe meant for emerging markets? Tri-band 3G so different versions required for local providers. I'm thinking an MSRP of 14,900 is Samsung Thailand localize it?

This would be a good phone for me because of the slightly bigger screen and the dual SIM. In my opinion the super high resolution screens are merely hype. I really can't tell much difference unless I use a magnifying glass. I'm happy to see a higher end phone with a decent camera and a dual SIM option. It depends on the price whether it is a bargain or not. Battery life is likely better with a lower resolution screen.

I'm guessing it will be double the price of the i-mobile for not a lot more.

@Monty

Samsung need more memory for all the bloat they force on you.

Not sure 1gh to 1.2ghz is a significant difference. You can often clock that yourself.

My S3 has no bloat on it. It's not difficult to eliminate the bloat. Certainly easier than unlocking and jail breaking an iPhone.

512Mb with Android 4.x?

I think I'd like to see how this performs with a few apps installed....

Stock Jellybean will run with 512 MB.

My phone runs fine with a custom ICS rom and 512 MB.

It's the bloatware needing more ram.

Htc will not upgrade their 512Mb devices for that reason.

You say stock JB will run in 512Mb yet you yourself use ICS.

Windows will run in 512Mb of RAM but pity the fool that does it.

Not enough juice in that phone for Bt6500, especially when RAM is so cheap.

I only run ICS because the custom rom I use is not available yet for my phone in jellybean! It is actually but currently still in alpha, which even for a nerd like me doesn't cut it :D

And apparently Jellybean should be slightly more frugal om memory compared to ICS.

Anyway, my original point was that the 6500 Baht phone should not be compared with the Samsung price wise, and certainly should not be brandished as having the same specs!

Eventhough it's still good value...
