Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung said he will propose Pha-ngan tourist island be designated a weapon-free zone.

He spoke following British ambassador to Thailand Mark Kent asking the Thai government to implement measures for the safety of tourists after Stephen Ashton, a Briton, was killed by a stray bullet while celebrating the new year on Pha-ngan island.

Mr Chalerm said the suspect was already arrested, adding that safety measures for tourists for the past four months have improved, and admitting that it was impossible to 100% monitor safety despite the fact that Thai police provided their fullest performance.

He said that the government should provide understanding to the public in tourist areas that weapons should be turned over to the government, while the government will compensate them with money in return. After the measure is put into place, additional tourist areas will be considered to follow suit.

Without guns, unlikely incidents will not happen, he said. (MCOT online news)

Without guns, unlikely incidents will not happen, he said.He should have preached this to his siblings, search their rooms (if not to far to walk in his mansion) and declare his house a weapon free zone. That would have kept Thai poeple from become victims of such 'incidents' !!!

What a joke, they just spill out what they think foriegn goverments want to hear, the worrrying thing is the guys in the Embassey will now consider it a job well done, and this is supposedly going to happen.

Similar Tripe came out after the rape and murder of the Welsh lady some years ago on Samui also after the speed boat over turned killing many on its way to FMP. The regulation of the boats, passengers, life jackets etc lasted abouta month.

Thai police give fullest performance before Songkran and before new year for tea money, after that back to the land of slumber.

Would this the same Chalerm who has a son that has been involved in a number of "incidents" ?

Including an alleged shooting in a Bangkok nightclub.crazy.gif

Try several sons allegedly involved in incidents.
