It would be interesting to see if the same would be done for software market.

If Microsoft could get rid of all the unlicensed copies, that would give a boost for IT salaries as well as give advantage for the companies who are using opensource software.

Yesterday I have been to MBK for the first time since a few years, and I was surprised and shocked that they still unabashedly displayed and sold a plethora of pirated software and CD's / DVD's

no wonder they are still ranking high on the international watchlist and this will probably never change.

Oh, and you could still buy ten-Thousands of pre-paid SIMs without anybody asking to register with ur personal data ;-)

I suspect this is just for show or someone forget to deliver

Pretty much anywhere you go in Thailand you can find

pirate or fakes of pretty much everything

Can't see it would make much difference, if people cannot get copies, then they would look to download Free stuff ..

Go to any Market, makes little difference City, Town or Village, you can buy a Movie [copy] for 65 - 75 baht, people appear to buy 10 or so at a time mostly, do you thing that even on the new wage of 300 baht people would even buy 1x genuine ?.

Do you thing that without copies people would stop eating paying any bill for a couple of months to buy M$ ? they would download something which is free and learn how to use it..... or just copy themselves from a friend.

Who will pay a wage to all these 1.000"s of people that sell the copies ?

What about all the shops that sell 2nd hand PC's for 2 - 3,000 baht, loaded with genuine OS and software would be far out of reach of many..

It is not as if they are trying to sell 'copies' as genuine or anywhere near genuine prices.

It's kinda like the fish/fruit/vegetable vendors in a nearby town. They are not allowed to sell between the sidewalk and road (i.e., the curb location) but they always setup their goods there taking-up part of the road.. When a policeman comes down the sidewalk the word goes out and the vendors remove their goods....the policeman can see them moving the goods but just continues to walk...after the policeman walks by and is about 20 meters down the sidewalk the vendors move back to their location...all the policeman needs to do is turn around to see how the vendors have moved back but he don't look back....he just continues to walk. I've watched the comedy event several times...last saw it occur two Saturdays back. It funny...and you can even see the vendors joke and smile about it while this little comedy excercise is underway. I hear that occasionally the police do issue tickets to the vendors, otherwise the vendors would not move even when the police walk directly by them....need to keep a little fear of the police in the vendors.

It's all a game...the police know what is going on...the vendors know what is going on...it's just a game...no real enforcement of the law...mostly occasional, selective, short-term enforcement.

I tend to disagree. Microsoft will never want to get rid of the piracy of their products as they won't risk to lose market dominance (which is a high possibility the way computing is changing nowadays). In fact, they have priced their new products quite aggressively, almost giving them out for free - Win 8 can be had for 30-40$, Office 2013 for 10$.

User demands are changing, and IT has no choice but to respond. That was the mistake RIM made, and now they are paying the price. They got stuck in the past, Apple is heading in the same direction as RIM. MS has a great management team, they were able to see the future...
