:D just wondering if i could pick your brains a bit her chaps..

Im soon to be moving full time to Thailand and am now starting to think about internet connections..

We built a house last year about 7kms outside of korat centre and if i have ever needed the net before it was just a case of visiting the mall, since then the situation has changed as i now need a good connection at my home for my work, so what would you guys suggest?..

Ive read bits and pieces about what to try and what to stay away from but i guess asking you guys would probably put me on the right course more than anything..

It just needs to be something half decent that is more than anything else reliable..

We do have phone lines in our town but im guessing you guys are using dishes or mobile technology..??

So what would you recommend to try and what would you say to stay away from..

Any help here would be most appreciated....cheers... :o

Look at IPStar on www.csloxinfo.com and forget about the phone lines.

IP star is universally recognised at the biggest pile of old terd you can lay your hands on

At 7km from the city you may be on the outer reach of ADSL, routers hold signal at these distances better that models alone.

Do you even have a phone line to your house yet?....guys on here have been waiting years!

Thanks for input guys...

yes ive seen plenty of reviews about Ip star and unfortunately most has been bad...i see they have a new adsl satalite system which is something like 3500bt(a massive saving on before) to be installed and 1500bt per month but not heard of any reliability yet!

Yes we will have a phone line sorted out, when we built our house we actually enquired about a phone service which involves putting a small box on the top of a pole and pointing towards the city, all looked fine when they done the checks for signal but when they came to install it all they had to put the post 15 metres high so we didnt bother...

After this we had a chat with our neighbour who is a town counciller type thing (aubadoir) and he agreed if we give him 3500bht he would concrete the road to our house and give us the phone line from his home (which i know is reliable)....

So far he has done the road so im hoping he is good to his word with the phone line..

Before we had that option i believe we had a quote for about 15000bht and a long wait..(no numbers left or something) :o

I just dont want to sign up to something or spend loads on eqipment which is going to be letting me down..

Thanks guys :D

Hello,

I assume you have or will have a mobile phone and that you've got some signal with it where you are. Seems to me Korat shouldn't be too bad. It doesn't cost much more to get GPRS. I used it a lot for a time and it worked well. I mean, not so fast but fine for email and a bit of surfing. If the mooban you're in has a better signal with AIS, go with them, otherwise check DTAC. I just switched to DTAC but that's mainly about politics.

Having your basic, at-least-email connection, check and see, as others have suggested, if you can get ADSL. I've got it here in Ubon Ratchathani. You get it, and you won't touch the GPRS anymore, but GPRS is always good to have for backup or when visiting people (sorry, I'm assuming, probably incorrectly, that you've got a laptop).

The dish option may be a true turd. A turd or not, I don't like the price. GPRS requires a somewhat sophisticated phone, but they all seem to be sophisticated these days. I'd say, give me bluetooth, stick the camera function up your. . . . well, you know what I mean. Ever since the camera function has been coming with the phones, kids have been asking me for photos almost everywhere I go (they come in groups, but at first you tell them you're busy and will submit to one photo, but then you have to go through all six or seven in the group. I don't know why, but sometimes schools give homework assignments, "get a farang photo." Yes, they teach them to invade one's privacy.

Of course, if you've got a phone line, but are too far away to get ADSL, well then there's the standard dial-up. I might be a rare case but I hate going and buying minutes. Get GPRS and hope to get ADSL sometime, that's my advice.

Good luck!

And a phone line dont forget!! :D

Plus he arranged for an extra post to be put in for us for electric, free..

I dont know who paid for the road to be done, i know it wasnt him as he is skint (hence the phone line coming to me) and it certainly wasnt me :D

Im pressuming it come from some form of towns money.. :o

The best and cheapest is ADSL if you can get it (I am ignoring dial-up - I don't think anyone would use it if they can get ADSL).

GPRS is widely available but horribly slow. It has the advantage of portability - if I take my notebook with me somewhere, I can use GPRS, but not IpStar.

IpStar gets a lot of bad press here on TV, but where I am it is the only option (other than GPRS) and although I have not had it for very long, so far I have no complaints. Perhaps those with problems were unlucky in not having the dish set up well. The speed sometimes is slow, but I think (and this is supported by discussion in other threads) that the problem lies in the connections from Thailand to the outside world, and so affects all intra-national systems. I have experienced the same slow speed sometimes at hotels and internet cafes in Thailand.

I am paying around 4000 Bt a month for the higher speed option of IpStar (512/256), which is pricey compared to ADSL, but as mentioned above, ADSL is not available where I am (no phone lines).

Thanks for info Phibunmike...

I think im gonna go for the GPRS connection until i find out about the line and if we can get Adsl..

We are not far from a local internet cafe and it is so slow i just tend to go to the city...so im not thinking dial up is much good anyway...

Whatever way it will be a shock leaving lightning fast broadband in the uk... :o

Cheers :D

I know what you mean - I have 1500 ADSL in Singapore and it is very fast when compared to almost everywhere else I go...

Good idea to stay with GPRS until you check your options out.

Maybe a little bit late, for a reply and I hope you found a solution for your internet connection.

But thanx to this forum I have one, it's not fast but i can do my things, e-mail, surfing, MSN with video, internet telephone.

I use a Eagle-gprs Aircard in my laptop with a prepaid (1-2-call) simcard, A voila, daddy was a happy man. Even tried it out in the middle of the rice-paddy's and it worked fine for me.

I bought it at Pantip, easy to install and easy to use, you can use your laptop as a mobilephone aswell (special feature coming with the software)

Im happy and satisfied untill we get a phoneline .
