YouTube has removed the "Rosetta Stone Thai" spoof video clip produced by US late-night TV show's "Saturday Night Live" that portrays Thailand in a negative light, mocking the country as a destination for sex tourists.

BANGKOK: -- Apinand Poshaya-nond, deputy permanent secretary for culture, has confirmed the removal yesterday.

Apinand said yesterday that the ministry would explain the situation later to the producer of "Saturday Night Live".

Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplome said his permanent secretary Prissana Pongtatsirikul signed an objection letter against the 1.32-minute clip and sent copies to the Foreign Ministry, the Information and Communications Technology Ministry and the US Embassy in Thailand to tell them the clip tarnished Thailand's image and asked for help to solve the problem urgently.

Sonthaya said the ministry also wanted the "Saturday Night Live" producer to explain the facts and know that Thais were upset about the offensive presentation. -The clip was a mock commercial for the Rosetta Stone foreign-language learning programme that teaches foreigners who want to speak Thai - so they learned how to buy sex. The skit upset many Thai citizens who felt it tarnished the country's image and caused complaints to be filed to the Culture Ministry.

I'm in Mahasarakham and I've just viewed it from the thread where it was posted. I looked at on Youtube and it's got this comment.

Re-uploaded because some people thought this was spam!!! can't even take a joke !!!

Not sure why they're saying it's been removed. I can't see that Youtube could remove it under their T&Cs so unless the original poster did (which I doubt) I can't see it going anywhere ...... except viral of course.

By now its been copied by a million plus people with free youtube download app, who are sending it to friends by e-mail ,and has most likely been uploaded to pirate bay for people to download for free.

Good luck with hidding the truth about the human race!!

In UK and definitely NOT removed from You Tube.

Just more Culture Ministry propaganda to the masses : the world jumps when the Thai Govt speaks.

Oh no it doesn't.

Appears that the original has indeed been removed, but there are likely re-posts of it.

What's your internet provider?

The original, original is still there for me on 3BB.... as well as its 10 subsequent uploads by the same poster.

Video is still working just fine here, but according to the ever-reliable government with its ever-trustworthy Culture Ministry boss and murderer fugitive assistant Sonthaya... it's removed.

Worth a chuckle is that the YouTube uploader already has ten copies of the same video posted on YouTube, all of which seem to be working just fine.... despite the Culture Ministry's self-aggrandizing claim of victory.

They have brought America to it's knees

Certainly it looked like that was about to happen during Obama's recent visit from the way Yingluck was coyly grinning and gazing into his eyes. laugh.png

It is still there on Youtube and also doing the email and facebook circuit. I think this is just some face saving propaganda media release telling the thai people that they have forced the U.S to bow down to the might of the Thais. They have brought America to it's knees and Thailand is not a country to mess with.

There are also new and similar video's poping up now mocking Thais sex culture.

Ah. Moles, very resourceful creatures. They dig and dig.

Maybe they just removed access for Bangkok. I just now watched the clip. It's still there.

Maybe they just told they removed it, as anyway no one in the government is skilled enough to use youtube.

Hilarious. I'm an American in America, and it's been removed from YouTube here, but with one search I watched it on another US news site. The video is funny, and true to some extent I'm sure. But it's only 1:30, and the direct insults to Thailand do not last very long. Overall it's a major overeaction by the Thai gov, but probably typical for Thailand. Pretend it's not real, sweep it under the rug. I think the upper crust/government Thais are the ones who want that reputation to go away, while the masses could probably care less (because they know it's true, and because they benefit from the sex trade).

For you non-Americans who might not be familiar with SNL, If you want a non-controversial SNL skit, try googline "more cowbell" and watching...funny stuff! The show is an American classic!

Working fine via Dtac's 3G internet this morning on my mobile. The Thais have a gift for promoting things they are trying to suppress. Not a clue...

Note to De beauty Culture Minister.

Advertising lesson 1.

If you want to bring something like this to the attention of millions, complain about it.
