Where can I buy Cloves in Udon Thani or Nong Khai. I've tried Macro in Nong Khai and the local market and stores in Phen but to no avail. The Thais don't seem to know what cloves really are as I've been given things such as Anise and leaves plus other dry spices. I want to use the cloves for pickled beets and pickles. Also where can I buy pickling vinegar as Macro and Tescoe don't have it. Thanks a lot.

That's strange... I don't recall Makro ever not having cloves... small bags and huge 1kg bags... that's the Makro in Roi Et anyway. For vinegar, check down the isle that has all the soy sauce. There's at least 10 different brands of white (clear) vinegar... works fine for picked beets and refrigerator pickles as well.

edit: beats is beets

I'm using regular vinegar now and it works well and I'll be going to Macro in Udon Thani this week to check out there spice department. Thanks for the info.

The word in the headline (red) is เครื่องเทศ meaning "spices".

That's why I spelt it the way I did. Wouldn't want anyone to say it as "can flu".The "garn ploo" pronunciation is much closer. I didn't show it in Thai as usually the mods delete it.

"the mods delete it" ??

They would delete a post completely in Thai, as it is an english language forum,

But helping out with some Thai translations, that would be weird for a Thai forum.

The transcription topic is an endless one and results in confusion anytime (as the official transkript is based on German language) biggrin.png

Best you can have is a sound sample as I linked in.

In nearly all Macro''s I've been too, and it's a lot, there is a speciality area usually between fresh produce and meats, that has lot's of dried spices and nuts etc.

I have seen them there at Makro Udon

No worries, wife was there today also it turned out, could have organised a guide 555

That would have been great as I'm having a heck of a time to find a lot of things that I like.

Where did you find the cloves by the way? Was it where I thought they are? Makro you can get lost and it's not always logical :)

Right in the spice section at the back of the store. There were only 3 bags left.

Nutmeg is also available in Makro, every now and then. Thais use it in baking so look in the shop that sells baking supplies.

Haven't looked for it but will report it if I find it.
