BANGKOK, March 8 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said it will take years to resolve the crisis in Thailand’s far South, saying that the recent agreement with an insurgent group was merely a primary step towards peace.

Talking to reporters on her return from a European visit on Thursday, she reassured that the government will do its best to bring peace to the southern border provinces.

She was referring to continued violence and attacks in the South despite an agreement between the Thai National Security Council and a Barisan Revolusi Nasional militant group in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 28.

It is not possible that the situation would instantly improve after the deal was signed, she said.

Opposition Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said the government was the only party that showed its readiness for talks and provided protection to the insurgents but there was no commitment from the militant group.

He called on the government to be more careful in its next round of talks with the insurgent leaders, set for March 28.

“The southern crisis is Thailand’s internal problem. The government must be careful in involving other country in the talks,” Mr Abhisit said. “The government contemplates including Indonesia in the negotiation process – a move that may elevate the issue to the global arena.” (MCOT online news)

She said it would be sorted by last April.

Where is the redoubtable Chalerm the man who knows all or so he tells us, surely as he knows who is who and what is what concerning the Southern problem.

With his (Chalerm) know how, know it all capabilities this Southern problem could be dealt with in the time it takes Chalerm to swig a measure of his ''ear medicine.""whistling.gif

Making a public show of signing an 'agreement' (sic) with just one faction of many is not going to impress anyone but your nearest and dearest supporters and certainly not any other parties.

PT is hamstrung by one crucial issue. The insurgents and their followers still despise it's leader for his part in the Tak Bai incident and no amount of PR will change that.

typo

In other words ,stop talking about it, and hope it goes away

There's really no hurry , they've been dancing to the whims of one particular faction for the past thirty plus yearscoffee1.gif

You mean, wait because I need to get my nails done today? How embarrassing.

I'm guessing Obama gave her lessons upon her visit to the US and advised her to be evasive at every opportunity. She has accomplished that!

How many more lives must be lost on this issue

The PT Gov't should all live in the South until the situation is remedied

Pretty sure then the issues would be taken more seriously

Brain dead and hapless . They still think that they can fanny about aimlessly why people are being terrorized and ask for more time .

More time for what. More aimless talks and bullshit about improved security. They are out of their depth and lack the ability and moral courage to do the hard yards to protect their own.

I often wonder if the insurgents were to target Bangkok central would they remain so calm and complacent, or simply emigrate.

How can Thaksin or Charlem claim any progress when there isn't any elections or amnesty bills that require a positive public opinion of us at the moment, but rest assured as soon as there is there will be progress.

To be fair the other side don;t know how to solve it either. The difference is they don't hate the Dems like they do anything with Thaksin's finger on it.

Big brother seems to have gone quiet on this. The newsworthy 'peace in our time' with help of our most favorite fugitive seems to have gone stall very rapidly

It might be more useful if they were to put forward a plan of action rather than just say have patience!

That's easy to say from your safe office, not the same for those in the South.
