TAT forecasts 5-6% growth in revenue from European visitors in 2013

BANGKOK, 15 March 2013 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is confident the country will see a sizable growth in spending by European travelers.

TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing Juthaporn Rerngronasa said on Thursday that the outlook of the European market, especially in Switzerland, Russia, Germany and Eastern Europe, remains sound and strong for Thai tourism.

Mrs. Juthaporn attributed such a promising viewpoint to the strong economic conditions in these countries.

She added that the main market for the Thai travel industry continues to be Russia, with some 1.3 million travelers from this country in 2012, followed by around 970,000, 400,000 and 200,000 visitors from Germany, France and Switzerland, respectively.

However, in the past year, tourists from Scandinavia dropped approximately 6% as seen by the drop in the number of charter flights to Thailand.

The TAT Deputy Governor added that more campaigns will be launched to attract high-end travelers and to penetrate small markets such as Dublin in Ireland and small cities in Poland, for instance, under the collaboration with some airlines.

Mrs. Juthaporn asserted that, all in all, European travelers remain quality visitors for the kingdom, with each of them having an average stay of 14 days, compared with the average of 4-5 days by Asian travelers.

Lastly, she noted that the TAT expects Thai tourism for the European market to grow 5-6% this year.

Hardly worth a mention ,given that it equates to a piss in the ocean in the context of their expected 23 million plus tourists .

The OP just mentions "TAT expects Thai tourism for the European market to grow 5-6% this year", the topic title has 'growth in revenue'.

Is it really growth in revenue or growth in number of tourists?

As for "attract high-end travelers", may I suggest a re-introduction of that previously so amazingly successful "Gold Elite Card" :-)

Yes of course there will be a 5-6% increase in spending if denominated in Euro or other European currencies -due to the ridiculous strength of the Thai Baht....

I would have thought Australians were quality tourists. We are 22million with 9 Thai airways, flights per day mostly all full to thailand alone. Then there is Jetstar...cathay..etc etc.

Europe has 11 Thai airways flights per day with 850million people and mostly half full... And then the other airlines.

My Thai partner tells me most of the traders he,speaks to ALONE not with me around.... State europeans, are looking not buying unless really cheap.

They state aussies,still buy.

Thai has their shit planes flying to.us.

I see with this place getting more expensive a resurgence to Bali may occur.

And as for Russians being quality... Well we can see what quality they bring in Pattaya, and Phuket.

I'm a bit dense sometimes, I must admit that. It's only now that I understand the topic on "chic toilets promote a new look at Suvarnabhumi Airport" :-)

I'm sure the Russians will be delighted to hear thmselves described as 'quality' visitors'.

That doesn't happen very often.

This thread is about European tourists.

I'm sure the Thais feel the same way about the Aussies although I do hear they prefer the more cultured Kiwis. Maybe it's because of phrases like "Thai has their shit planes flying to us".....whistling.gif

Wouldn't be my first choice of how to describe them either.

I wouldn't believe anything TAT releases, tsunami=boost in tourism, Bangkok burning=more tourists, flooding, you guessed it, more tourists on the way. their press releases are good for my garden, as fertilizer.

TAT once again missed the current exchange ratewhistling.gif

of course spending will increase when everything is costing morew00t.gif

I know it might come as shock for a economic mastermind like you, BUT a qualified guess is that TAT are doing their predictions in the local currency. The socalled BAHT! whistling.gif

These numbers are amusing to say the least.

I have a decent income in Europe and could afford to take the familly to thailand every year.

While the baht is so strong il give other places a try, im certainly not in a hurry to pay 1st world rates in a 3rd world country.

I am sure penetrating a small market like Dublin will be very successful. That should increase the highend tourists by a few dozen.rolleyes.gif

Excellent "quality" post!

It seems Thanavath Phonvichai, director of the Economic and Business Forecasting Centre at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has a different opinion than TAT. He said yesterday tourists from the Asean are the main market for Thailand and they're replacing the European and US markets.

I wonder if the Dep Gov would care to elaborate on this 'statement'?

"... Mrs. Juthaporn attributed such a promising viewpoint to the strong economic conditions in these countries."

Seems to me with the Euro at an all time low and just hanging in as a currency, and only Germany holding up, this may be a little off the mark.

Is that 'us' supposed to be 'US' as in USA.

Stop it already... Tourism here, tourism there, tourism everywhere.

Dear TAT aka OTMT (Organized Tourism Mafia of Thailand), how much do you pay the Nation to spread out that crap a number of times???

Nobody wants to read that crap anymore, except yourself...cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Wow, really, thanks for the explanation, i did not realiaze when i said things cost more you would have problems understanding it was baht, nor did i realize you also had problems comprehending that when exchange rate is not good, people either do not come or spend less.

But carry on trolling across the board, you doing wellcrazy.gif

Does the TAT promotion activities include stressing the ease with which one can use Thailand as base to go to the Myanmar Andaman Islands with pristine beaches and untouched (yet) coral reefs?

I'd like to know how TAT get these forecasts. I would bet that they simply use straight line historical growth and project forward. Unfortunately the reality is that the eurozone economy is barely registering any growth, and the Thai baht against Euro is very strong. So it is hard to imagine how revenue from European tourists is going to grow by 5-6% in Baht terms.
