NanLaew Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Advice sought on what is considered to be the best android smartphone backup app. My Nexus S has had several OTA updates over the years and despite clearing out unused apps and keeping the memories from getting full, it still spits and farts and sometimes just dies. I read on a another forum that doing a system reset after each OTA update keeps them running smoother. I need to keep the phone numbers and contacts and these may not all be on the SIM. Is there also a recommended SIM backup app? So I am looking for something that will easily AND completely backup the phone AND restore it after the reset. There's a couple of apps that had +4 stars but one of them curiously didn't have restore working yet (how can you rate that anything more than 1 star?!) and the other one can't handle firmware above 4.0 since it says google changed security permissions. Oh yes, able to backup to something other than SD such as dropbox or cloud. The Nexus S has the 'onboard' SD card so backing up to that and doing a reset means losing the lot. Over to the experts! Ta, NL
Chicog Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I use Go Backup. It's even better if it's rooted, but should still do the job of backing up apps, ringtones, SMS, contacts, etc.
lomatopo Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I'm not certain there is a single "magic bullet" to address each and every Android user's back-up requirements. There are so many things which can be backed up: image (Nandroid), apps./apps data, user originated data: pictures, contacts, call logs, smses, book-marks, calendars....BTW, the most important bit of data to back-up might be the \EFS, try starting a phone with a corrupted or missing nv_data.bin file If you can root the device then a Nandroid (CWM) back-up is recommended, then maybe Titanium Back-up Pro for apps/data back-up and restore (not as necessary these days as the Play Store keeps track of your installed apps), then drag/drop user originated files (like pictures) to a PC , then sync contacts with GMail - or sync with Outlook via MyPhoneExplorer, then use Super Backup for contacts, logs, smses, et al. I've seen a new Android app. called Carbon which looks interesting but I have not used it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/NANDroid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fjsoft.myphoneexplorer.client&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5manNvZnQubXlwaG9uZWV4cGxvcmVyLmNsaWVudCJd http://www.fjsoft.at/en/ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idea.backup.smscontacts&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5pZGVhLmJhY2t1cC5zbXNjb250YWN0cyJd https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5rb3VzaGlrZHV0dGEuYmFja3VwIl0.
