First time posting, I just arrived and I'm working in the Chatuchak area. I can't get data/internet working on my mobile phone. I was in China previously and I got 3G data working, by just setting the correct APN.

I've google searched for a solution for an hour and then went to an AIS store at Central Mall but they could not get it working. I don't think they were very smart.

I have AIS 12Call prepaid and I have data enabled and I have already prepaid for 20 hours.

Here are the specs of my phone:

Unlocked LG Optimus T
2G Network GSM 850/900/1800/1900
3G Network HSDPA 1700/2100
GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps
EDGE Class 10, 236.8 kbps
Speed HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
This is all I can find on AIS's web site about 3G compatibility:
"The third generation of mobile phone standards, also known as UMTS or W-CDMA, is compatible with 850, 900, 1800, 1900
and 2100 MHz frequencies on the GSM system"

Does anybody know if my phone should get data/internet on their network?? This is very frustrating...

Call AIS customer service and find out what shop is located conveniently to you. Not for paying bills (telewiz) but a real AIS shop, and bring in your phone they'll set you up.

Yes. And no.

You will get 2g data. Gprs or edge. But Ais is currently only 3g on 900mhz HSDPA. They are launching 2100mhz shortly. The only suppliers of 2100mhz currently are TOT and their contracted dealers like I-mobile etc.

If you want 3g in Thailand my suggestion is buy a phone with 850/900/2100 3g capabilities.

I-mobile do decent low cost models starting from about 5,000baht. If I was buying now I would look at the IQ4.

Did you really get 3G in China with this phone? Which service provider?

I only ask as it looks to me to be a T-Mobile/U.S. 3G compatible phone as it supports 1700 <downstream>/2100 <upstream> MHz 3G (AWS). It doesn't seem like that would work with 2100 MHz (Band 1)?

FWIW, AIS/One-2-Call do have a 3G data roaming agreement with TOT (2100 MHz-Band 1), so assuming you've got the APN set up be sure to tick "data roaming" as this will allow you to roam onto TOT at no extra charge.

I assume you've got GSM data (AKA: 2G: GPRS/EDGE) working? Be advised that once you exceed your time limit you will be paying 1 baht/min so it is very easy to deplete your balance in a few hours, or less.

Agree with thaicbr that a new phone might be advisable.

You should be able to access Internet with AIS however it will only on 2G(very very very slow).

Rather then getting a new phone straight away. I would suggest changing your sim to Truemove H as they are using 2100mhz(HSPA, HSPA+).

If it doesn't work then you might really need to get a new phone.

TrueMove H resell CAT 3G, on 850 MHz.

Over the next 3 - 6 months TrueMove should start to deploy another new brand of 3G on 2100 MHz as a result of the recent auction.

In China I had China Unicom and the little data icon on the top of my screen said "3G" but yea, it was slow there.

Now I cannot get any data at all, 2G or 3G. Even after a visit to the AIS store where they entered an APN.

I'll try the "Data Roaming", and if that doesn't work I will try a Truemove H SIM card.

I would hate to get a new phone because I just bought this phone a month ago.

Where are they using 2100mhz... currently they use 850mhz..On CAT's network. the 2100mhz rollout for True will be over the next 3-12 months..

TOT and their resellers are the only ones using 2100mhz currently.

Are you able to make and receive calls with your One-2-Call SIM?

What is the reply to *121# Send? *139# Send?

You should be able to get GSM data (2G:GPRS/EDGE) at a minimum. That you cannot indicates a problem with the configuration or the phone.

APN settings, scroll down to #3 for Android: http://www.ais.co.th/faq/en/handset_setting.html

I can make and receive calls. *121# gives my call time balance, *139# gives my data hours balance (19 hours 57 min, they used 3 minutes when I was at the AIS store they put my SIM in another phone and they used 3 minutes of data and showed me that the SIM was working.)

Enabling data roaming didn't fix it. Still no data connection...

OK. Maybe double-check the APN settings - it is very easy to mis-type when entering those details - , and, if possible, try the SIM in another phone. Based on the details it still seems like there is a problem with the hardware (phone) or the configuration (APN).

My AIS SIM card does get data/internet when I try it in another phone. I did a second trip to an AIS shop, this time in MBK, and they still couldn't get data to work on my phone. They checked my APN. I gave up, my phone just doesn't work on their network. So I bought a TrueMove H SIM card and data works but its only EDGE, not 3G. Slowww, I don't know how long I can deal with data at this speed. I may have to buy a new phone...

But thanks for all the replies!

Well we did tell you true 3h would not work at 3g speed. Only TOT and their resellers use 2100mhz 3g currently . You chose to ignore that advice ..

For 120 baht extra I signed up for 1GB of TrueMove H Wifi. And I'm getting a decent wifi connection wherever I am so I'm happy now.
