Pa? Chinese Unclle Or Auntie

Featured Replies

I have a female friend who calls me Pa. I am a male. The closest I can translate is Chinese Uncle or Auntie. When I show it to her in a Thai dictionary she says it means Auntie? Should I be insulted? I am not in the least bit feminine.

depends on its sound Pa(ป๋า) she call you "daddy" Pa(ป้า) means "aunt"

if she call you Pa(ป๋า) it means many ways such as you look old or it makes she feel young or more feminine

Pa(ป้า) for someone who has old fashioned dress ( for female )

My english is so crap i hope you can get it

The Privy Councillor and former Prime Minister General Prem, a statesman, is called in the press-

ป๋าเปรม bpa (rising tone) bpraim, meaning a respected uncle, senior figure.

Also note, however, that another use of ป๋า ("bpa" - rising tone +) can also be used to show respect, but also somewhere along the lines of "sugar daddy"! (eg. girls at the lounge/massage parlour call their Thai customers)

P.S. just as a warning so if you're a guy, better to not go around calling your respected elder male acquaintances "bpa+" unless you're sure everybody else is!
