BANGKOK: -- Police are examining security-camera video for evidence to issue arrest warrants for three young people who shot dead a 25-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl and wounded seven others in Bangkok's Soi Inthamara 29 on Sunday, Pol Colonel Charoen Srisalak, Metropolitan Police Area 2 deputy chief, said yesterday.

Police know the names of three of the four suspects, who are from the Sutthisarn and Huai Khwang areas of Bangkok. Charoen said the gang, whose members have prior police records for drug offences, aimed shots at a rival gang in a narcotics-related conflict, but the bullets hit innocent bystanders.

In a separate incident, police are also looking for a taxi driver who on Sunday shot and seriously injured his passenger Pawinkiat Kavikijpisit after a heated argument stemming from Pawinkiat's reportedly being drunk and throwing up in the cab. Pawinkiat suffered a punctured lung and was in stable condition in hospital.

Elsewhere, Songkran celebrations in Sukhothai's Muang district were marred when a gang of young people opened fire at a rival gang on Sunday evening, resulting in one death and three injuries.

In Chon Buri's Sri Racha district, police responding to reports of a shooting at 9am yesterday seized an assault rifle and 49 rounds of ammunition on Sukhapibal 8 Road. Police arrested one of the two men who had reportedly initiated the attack, Permporn Khongkhasri, 35, who was found beaten up at the scene. Police later arrested Supoj Ngamsa-nga, 25, who helped the other assailant, identified as Niwat Pongpul, 37, to flee.

Holiday time, alcohol flows and peoples mindsets change. Many people become far more relaxed and enjoy life due to the festive feelings induced by assorted factors..

However some people become aggressive, tempers flare and the festive spirit becomes a festering s malevolent spirit and we see the results, old scores are settled as gang groups many cases consider that their self perceived enemies have dropped their guard.Often that is not the case many of these characters and groups are on high alert fueled by assorted substances, alcohol, and a macho spirit and a false sense of security

However such incidents are not confined to Thailand alone far from it.Christmas and New Year holidays in the U.K were always marked by a big jump in domestic and general violence if one was on duty as a police officer it was indeed a trying time the same situation applied to medical staff too and ''The Samaritans'' always had extra switchboards in operation to deal with the calls of those in need.

The same scenario applied to other holidays and those few long hot summer days that we sometimes had in The U.K. although not as bad as Christmas and the New Year.

In reality it's not so much a national culture subject it's more a human behavior problem when certain sections of the human race revert to their long gone tribal protection and I am the top dog instincts.

The problem being of course the innocent bystanders and passers by also suffer as the O.P. clearly shows..

I'm sure there is some influence from America through films and TV. It would be strange if there wasn't although it's obviously not the only reason and it does happen elsewhere.

I'm sure there is some influence from America through films and TV. It would be strange if there wasn't although it's obviously not the only reason and it does happen elsewhere.

A couple of years ago a acquaintance of mine, a well built Thai speaking German, was riding his m/cycle home late at night when he was boxed in by a couple of youths. He stopped and asked what their problem was and where did they want to take it so they rode off. The next day one of his Thai friends had the horrors when he told the story and he was warned not to be so responsive again again as many of the youths out late night are armed and that's not with knives. Now, I am talking about Udon Thani not Bangkok, Pattaya or the like

Yeah I keep hearing that but I'm still not convinced only because 1) the average Thai you see walking around doesn't own or carry a gun 2) Bangkok is always noisy and there are few really quiet streets 3) gun related crimes in the USA make it to the news and are analyzed and then re-analyzed many times whereas in Thailand they might appear on the front page news one morning and then go away. I'm not saying that gun homicides are not more common in Thailand than in other countries - I'm just saying it does not appear to be the case.

Going back to Thaksin's war on drugs when more then 2,000 dealers " killed each other " to avoid prosecution it was overlooked that the country was awash with firearms and when there are technical school students shooting at each other the alarm bells should be ringing

After some research I found out that basically anyone can edit a Wiki article, and in fact that is exactly what was done. Forget whether or not Thailand is number one or number sixteen, the real tip off should be that it does not exist on the list of countries.

The following scenes seem to repeat itself week in week out:

(2) Use of chloroform to smother female protagonists

I wonder if these kinds of incidents are more common now than they were in the past, say 25 years ago? I've been around Thailand a little longer than that, and I don't remember hearing about such incidents back then, and I've never had any serious trouble with Thai people like this, but I'm beginning to wonder.

I have noticed a general change in the culture though over the years. Thai people, the younger ones at least, seem far less polite, more self-centered, more materialistic. I guess that's what becoming a more "developed" country does. When that's the kind of environment you have, those with more vicious and criminal tendencies are more likely to act in these senselessly violent ways. I don't think it has much to do with "American influence". It seems to me the Koreans are far more influential on the culture these days than the Americans could ever hope to be. When I see some K-Pop videos, they seem like something out of a warped Asian version of Clockwork Orange.

Ok. This conspiracy thinking is ridiculous. This was explained numerous times before, but to recap;

UN report listed Thailands gun crimes (which include illegal possession) as gun murders, due to a translation error. Wiki used UN as source for its page. Nation master used Wiki as source. UN corrected its mistake, and subsequently Wiki did so as well. Nation master on the other hand did not. Nation master is a crap site with most used sources dating back 10 to 20 years, and never updated.

Very sad when innocent bystander are killed. My deepest sympathy to their family and friends.

With regard to the web site, I seriously question the accuracy of some of the statistics. For example the site states that the rate of drug offences in Canada (I looked at the comparison between Canada and Thailand) is 92,590 per 100,000 people. To achieve this rate at the very least every Canadian over the age of 6 would have to have been charged with a drug related offence.
