Political risks for Yingluck govt on rise, survey finds
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- Factors that could be seen as posing political risk for the Yingluck Shinawatra government are rising, an opinion survey has found.

The Abac Poll of Assumption University revealed that the conflict between the government and independent organisations had a risk index of 6.51 out of 10, and was the highest risk index facing the government.

Noppadol Kannikarn, director of the Abac Poll, said 43.8 per cent of respondents said they saw political risks for the government were rising, while 39.4 said the risk level remained unchanged, and 16.8 per cent said the risks appeared to be receding.

The Political Risk index survey was carried out among 2,168 respondents from provinces including Bangkok, Sukhothai, Chiang Mia, Khon Kaen, Surin, Phuket and Supan Buri from May 10 to 25.

The respondents were at least 18 years old.

The second most serious risk factor for the government was conflict between its supporters with the masses from the opposite side, with an index value of 5.84 out of 10, Noppadol said.

The alleged interference in and domination of government policies by elite people in and outside the country came third as the most serious risk factor at 5.72.

The respondents rated rumours of a likely coup at 5.35 points, making it the fourth highest risk factor for the government.

Alleged corruption and nepotism became the fifth highest risk

factor at 5.35. Alleged unfair treatment and political discrimination came sixth with the index at 5.24.

Noppadol said 54.7 per cent of respondents believed the government's policies were being implemented to benefit the elite class more than the grassroots, but 45.3 per cent saw the reverse.

Nevertheless, 52.8 per cent of the respondents said they still supported Yingluck as prime minister while 20.4 said they did not support her and the rest had no comment.

Well at least some one is awake at the wheel, even blind Freddy could see the gradual degeneration of democracy under this Administration and yet the worrying signs for the Nation is that these people, that are the political arm of Government , cannot see it, they keep bulldozing their way on some ideology journey that doesn't sit well for Thailand, one way to get offside with Thailand's western allies, is to have another Coup or become a totalitarian state type dictatorship, your road to total democracy will be along one , mainly due to old ancient ideologies and not wanting to move forward, with a clear plan for the future.coffee1.gif

Interesting statistic if we look at the 54.7% to benefit the elite one would wonder if it would go down munch if the word elite was left out and Thaksin substituted.

Out of the 45.3% who see the reverse it would be interesting to see how many of them base their idea on Thaksin being white washed and returning to Thailand.

The Thai Rak Thai governments were a good start to move toward democracy. And now we have another government with a good mandate that should lead Thailand to democracy, the next essential step is to elect a sucessor government with a clear mandate (regardless of colour) and then progess toward a Democratic Constitutional Monarchy that functions well is in the hand of the Thai people. However the populous need to accept demotcratic rule which ever colour is handed the mandate, unfourtunatl ythe greed of the Thai, their kill kill attitude to any oposition and their extrordiary inabilitity to understand what democracy means stands squarely in their way.

I agree Dolly, seems the criminal Thaksin is the greatest threat to his puppet government when all the results are considered..........

How does weakening and dismantling the checks & balances, weakening idependent organizations, ignoring the law, undermining the judiciary, especially the constitutional court, using nepotism and cronyism to ensure "friends" in controlling postitions, acting illegally, and openly taking instructions from a convicted fugitve criminal further the cause of democracy? Not to mention supression of freedom of speech and attempts to muffle criticism whilst telling lies.

Could you please expaln what makes you think this government are doing anyhing to move forward democracy as opposed to creating a dictatorship?
