I am the guy who started the thread "my recent trip to Udon".

Unfortunately you are missing the point I made about expats. In this thread you have graded expats entirely on their income. I am only in my forties and have retired early to Thailand as a self made millionaire. However, I do not judge other expats by their net worth, or their salary.

I judge them on their self respect. In Udon, I did not observe a single expat who took pride in himself or his conduct.

Why on earth was your "Recent trip to Udon",from Phuket of all places by bus then?cheesy.gif

Even the cheapest backpacker would NOT make that epic journey by bus,a millionaire business man would just fly Silk Air (Business Class) with Thai Air for around 10-15,000 baht return!rolleyes.gif

Agreed. I've commented on this already, but my post seems to have been removed.

It would appear that little Phronesis is living in a dream world.

A.k.a. Phony-sis!

From the comments so far it would appear Chiang Mai is the place to be if you want to meet quality expats in Thailand.

I'd go along with that.

Toodle pip! thumbsup.gif

Sure, there is quality in Chiang Mai. I know many IT and E-COMMERCE specialists who are based in Chiang Mai. Some of them do really well.

This said, there is a fair amount of crap in Chiang Mai, too. I'm talking about sexpats, scumpats and <snip>.

Quality-Expats hang around Golf-Courses and play polo with a rented horse in Pattaya. In Bangkok they own the Golf-Course including the horses. You may want to relocate.

- Thai's consider "Quality-Expats" as people in excess of 15 Million US-Dollars (not Thai-Baht) net worth.

All others are here on an eternal Tourist-VIsa, that have to be Re-Approved on an annual basis.

In the final analysis, you will have to be approved by "Quality-Thai-People in Power" to turn yourself into a "Quality-Expat" as you describe it. They will research your background..

I hope you can qualify as an "Quality-Expat". If not, who cares?

Cheers.

The best place to find high quality expats in Thailand would be at Suvarnabhumi airport in the THAI Royal First Lounge.

It depends on how we define what is an expat.

Does the OP mean those who live or legally work permanently in Thailand and apply for visa extensions and meet the imposed visa requirements or the forever tourists who have to cross over borders every few weeks and either work illegally or hassle to stay here?

In my opinion the real expats, meaning those who apply for visa extensions within Thailand and are legally here long term, are of the same ilk no matter where they decide to plonk themselves in the kingdom.

As for the Thais that is another story, I can definitely see differences between the native populations according to what part of the country they originate.

Chiang mai has the largest concentration of missionary scum in Thailand, to qualify as second to the lowest bottom of the barrel

"missionary scum" ... that a strange, but traditional position to adopt ... rolleyes.gif

The only thing wrong with Thailand is the arrogance and oneupmanship of certain farangs.I have never known a forum to be so stuck up as this one,its renown for this.

This post is a flame/troll,and i cant believe its not been thrown in the junk bin, maybe the guy should be thrown in a bin too, with derogatory comments like this.

I agree with the OP. The expats in Udon are the lowest of the low. A lot look like they are deranged and need help in a mental facility.

What the heck are you going on about? For your information I'm 6 foot 6 and an ex professional football player. After that I was in special OPs in the Navy. I'm a multi-multi millionaire who was CEO of a Dow 30 company. My IQ is 170. I have a doctorate in being all knowing.

I'm just flat out a typical expat. cheesy.gif

So the ops favourite expats are Japanese men and elderly married Scandinavian's. Takes all kinds I guess

Just to add to your crappy op, my wife married a farmer's son. So how's that make you feel? Am I on your low level opinion also? No wonder you have trouble finding friends.

That doesn't make sense. You must be seperated before she got remarried

It's the old riddle. The answer is that his wife is married to him, and he's a farmer's son.

I realize much of this is tongue in cheek but the crux of it is not. I think the op a bit of a dolt himself.

First, by his definition it would appear that the only good expatriate, is a working expatriate. This follows much the jello thinking of the "retiree brigade". Namely, if you dont have xxxxxxxx net worth, please leave Monaco errrr....Thailand immediately. In fact, just go kill yourself. Ironically, he then goes to name a bunch of dirty industries and think salaried jobs are just tits.

While I will not argue with your assessment of guys up in the NE, I have met so few. I do enjoy reading the farming forum and that lot seems to be quite a hardworking bunch.

I'd say that Bangkok and Phuket have the most monied expats. Perhaps Phuket. Possibly with that, the most educated expat (retirees mostly).

I will say, your geographic understand of Thailand in a real and political sense is horrible.

Finally, why is it that a "quality" expat has to be a working expat? There is so much classism that comes from tjis board and ironically, most of you are working stiffs.

Thailand attracts men that are interested in sex and pub grub.

Quality people can be found anywhere, but I suggest you engage in activities where you will come across them. If you are looking around in a bar at 11pm on a Tuesday night in Pattaya for a stimulating conversation, you're gonna have a bad time.

Why do "quality" people need to fit into your box anyway? I'd be super curious to see the TV list of what makes a person of "quality". Since money number one, would seem a grubby oil worker and high school dropout worth 1m more worthy than retired school teacher on.a pension.

If you are at such a loss to meet "quality" people, great idea here GO HOME.

Oh, and why did you leave in the first place? Oh yeah, cheap available sex and low cost of living. A magnet of quality.

Before all of you even start discussion on where you can find "quality expats" it would be helpful to define 'qualities' of people.

Because whether you like it or not, Expats are people.

Are you talking of

'Quality by Nations' - like some suggest - Japanese, Germans, Chinese, Russians, etc.? Smells Racist to me...

'Quality by Income' - like some suggest - millionaires, working for high wages, pensioners, married to farmers daughters, etc.? Smells old Class Theories to me...

'Quality by Age' - like some suggest - young, middle age, pensioners, very old 'farts', etc.? Smells something hard to define, maybe Durian to me...

'Quality by Religion' - nobody suggested yet - but it is early hours, so somebody might come up with Christians on top ? Stinks to High Heaven to me...

'Top of the Barrel' - as OP suggested - that's a new one to me! I know some other staff that always floats to the top and it ain't oil... It stinks naturally... but some like it...

I am not trying here to pull any opinion down, I am genuinely trying to understand what 'Quality Expat' is before locating them in Thailand.

It has just occurred to me that a 'Quality Expat' from Immigration Office point of view is the one who never overstays and reports within 90 days. On the other hand, maybe the one who breaks the rule is better for the income?

The next idea is to consider a 'Quality Expat' from Education point of view. Unfortunately too often an uneducated self-made millionaire beats a poor Professor of some obscure science not only in wealth but in other human qualities...

Many people believe that the level of Culture could be used to define 'Quality Expat'. It is the closest to my heart, yet it also smells snobbish ...

Please help me here to understand what the Hell you are talking about?... coffee1.gif

I am a slow typist. A couple of good posts appeared meanwhile. At last some people asked the right questions. clap2.gif

I think the OP means overall quality. I mean a lot of the old farang men I see in isaarn wouldn't look out of place in bus shelters around Melbourne drinking themselves to death and begging for change. Bums is the word im looking for
