BANGKOK: -- A warning was issued yesterday for heavy downpours and possible floods and landslides until tomorrow in 39 provinces of upper Thailand as well as Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Phang Nga in the South.

Small craft were advised to stay close to shore because of high waves and strong winds.

Chatchai Phromlert, director-general of the Disaster Preven-tion and Mitigation Department, said it had instructed its regional branches and provincial authorities to prepare for disasters and emergencies and monitor conditions around the clock. Disaster victims should call the 1784 hotline.

In Ranong, one of the 39 provinces, authorities were keeping an eye on 84 landslide-prone areas in five districts.

In Phang Nga, which has suffered from heavy downpours for three days, forest run-off hit three tambon in Takua Pa district - Bang Moung, Bang Sai and Tam Tua. At least 80 homes were under 50-100 centimetres of flood water, while the rising river in Kapong and Muang districts threatened to flood people's homes.

WoW.......I didn't know that heavy downpours could shoot someone dead!!!!

I thought this wonderful Govt had sorted out all the flooding by now?

Bangkok is reported as one of the cities doomed to being submerged in water, sunk in other words, due to global warming or whatever the cause is for Bangkok's ever-increasing submersion by centimeters annually. Thus, the "government" is not responsible for this, although perhaps every "government" is for not reducing global warming quickly enough.

Pouring here in Langsuan for 2 days continuously now, however I can report as of yet no dead bodies with gunshot wounds have been recovered, probably because no one with any sense would want to venture out with or without a gun.

It seems our 6 months of rain has started with a vengeance.

Take a murder and instead of reporting it by itself tye it into unreliable weather forecasting.

Now they are having a hard time finding the money.

Pravit .....shot dead. I can only assume in one of the 39 provinces.

It would have been nice if they included the list of provinces. I see Rayong was mentioned, so I'm going to assume Chonburi is on the list (that maybe exists somewhere?).

Easy answer. The gun he was using to fish with accidently went off during the flooding. Lucky he wasn't hit by lightening as well, because that would have been real unlucky.

Why should there be any "disasters" the rainy season comes every year its normal... "Its the rainy season people"

Talking of stories of luck and in a closely related story:

Did you hear about that Mountie in the Rocky Mountains in Canada.

He worked on an observation post high above the forest canopy and apparently he was described as being the luckiest man alive as he had been struck by lightening 6 times and survived...........that is, until he was struck for the 7nth time in a rowing boat and they found his smouldering body after if drifted to the edge of the lake!!! His record went just as he went!!!!.

I don't think you can expect any government to eliminate all flooding considering the weather patterns here. What's more relevant is how much flooding still occurs, how much help is given and does the cost appear to match the measures taken to achieve this?

I'm glad the writer listed the 39 provinces - that'll keep me reading articles like this. ... they weren't listed? (musta been washed away already, like major parts of this piece.)

I'm also glad my browser stumbled posting, he said apologetically.

Those asking for a list of provinces. The Thai Met Office website can be a little quirky at times, but mostly good warning info based on satellite data. http://www.tmd.go.th/en/
