I have heard that a smartphone can be tethered to a laptop to provide internet access. Does anyone know if this is true? I don't want to install Wi-Fi for someone who will be using my house for a month only.

Yes u can depending on the model of smartphone and also availability of wireless wifi of laptop.

I have been doing this for the last month on my Samsung Exhibit 4G smartphone in rural Thailand, work pretty well. Forget about trying to stream video though, but everything else works OK.

Many smartphones can be connected to a PC via USB or Bluetooth and can utilize the smartphones's mobile data connection (2G/3G), much like an old dial-up modem. This is commonly referred to as "tethering". Many smartphones can also create a local WiFi network and can thus allow up to five (5) devices (PCs, tablets, other smartphones, etc.) to share a smartphone's mobile data connection. This is commonly referred to as "Mobile AP" or "mobile hot-spot".

Don't forget to have a good data package.

I find using the laptop tethered to my smartphone uses a lot of data.
