Hello,

I have searched the Internet and this forum but haven't found the relevant info.

I am in the process of adopting my nephew in-law. I have all the required documents and consent from all of the parties involved, except for the key document which is the certificate of eligibility to adopt. This document is required under The Hague convention rules for international adoption, which Thailand is a part of.

At the child adoption centre in Bangkok it was explained to me that this document can be obtained from a lawyer. They then pulled out a file which had various embassies recommended/approved lawyers for this certificate. I got all the contact details and began making some inquiries. So far I have received one reply out of their/the recommended embassies lawyers and I am absolutely horrified. The quote has come back at 100,000 baht fee (30 to 40 hours work at 5000 baht an hour, doesn't add up!) + 20,000 baht costs with "possibility additional cost". I am astounded at the price for a certificate. Please can anyone with experience of this help me understand? Am I missing something? I have previously provided a certificate of eligibility to marry, which I made myself for free and the embassy approved/signed and stamped, and jus can't fathom the cost. I have replied asking them to explain what the fee and costs are in typing up and printing a certificate also why it takes 30-40 hours.

I feel like this is going to set back everything and have some suspicion about the cost. Once again if anyone has been through this process and obtained a certificate of eligibility to adopt, preferably British, please advise.

Thank you

Embassy lawyers lists often have somewhere the footnote attached that the embassy is not recommending them, it is just a list for your convenience.

I suggest seeking out a few lawyers with a good reputation regarding family law. One of them is Isaanlawyers, it they can't help you/ are too far they might know a lawyer in your own region.
