Roi Et, place on the Lake?

Featured Replies

For several years I have once or twice a month made the drive from Kalasin to Roi Et to have Breakfast at the Farang place almost next to Pizza 101 on the lake... Anyway, last week stopped in there and was told that it had been sold by the Canadian to an Italian guy and the Thai lady serving us did not know if it was still going to be open during the day / mornings or if he planned on just making it into more of a Bar that also serves food and only open from about 6:PM until whenever...

Can anyone in the Know post and let us know what the owners intentions are for the place???

Pianoman, I had to spend four nights in Roi-et last year and found a place on I guess the west side that sold great pizza, I asked the lady that ran the place if it was owned by a Canadian, she said yes, but that he had died a couple of years before. She said the place next door was owned by a Canadian, is that the place you mean?

That sounds like the place, next to or very close to Pizza 101.... They always served a really decent breakfast and it was pleasant to sit by the lake and watch the "Roi Et World" go by... I guess I am just being Lazy, but I would hate to make the 40 minute drive down there from Kalasin, only to find the place Closed for whatever reason....

I was just hoping that someone from Roi Et might know what is happening at the place and if they are still openning at 10:am for breakfast customers...

I relented last Tuesday and made the trip to Roi Et to see if I could still get my favorite breakfast there...

Open as usual about 10:am, and after eating spoke to the Wife / Ex-wife?? of the Canadian guy who has owned it... She said the "Yes" it has been sold to a man from Italy and that he was coming to Roi Et either that afternoon or Wednesday afternoon... She said that she thought that he would still open at 10:am and serve breakfast, but not for sure... She went on to say that he would sell more "Drinks" and stay open later at night, and of course serve Italian Food...

Pizza one-oh-one was owned by a Canadian man many years ago. I am not sure to remember her name correctly, I think it was joe. We had several great nights together. He lived in Thailand for a long time and had so many stories. He was married to Nim (if I remember) and she took over when he passed away. Joe passed away around 2005-2007. It has been a while, not sure of dates.

Tim is another Canadian who setup his business beside Pizza One-oh-one around 2005-2006. But Tim and Joe are not the same, both Canadians. You are talking about the place beside the pizza which was Tim's place.

I haven't been to Roiet for two years but I used to live there and knew them. I knew more Joe, as I left just before Tim opened.

I always thought The White Elephant had some of the greatest Thai food in Isaan.

Yes, I am talking about the place next to Pizza 101... I have spoken to the Canadian owner multiple times over the past couple of years, and always seemed like a really nice guy... I was surprised to learn of his sudden return to Canada, and really do not know what promted it...

When talking with his Wife / Ex-wife when I was last there, I asked how her husband was doing and all she said was "He go home to Canada"... I did not press for any further information....

Anyway, for selfish reasons I truly hope that the New (Italian) owner keeps both the early opening times and the good breakfast service...

A friend of mine was in Roi Et on Thursday this week and the place was closed for refurbishment but no idea for how long that might be.

The place is reopening on Tuesday 13th August. Special day 'free food'! Yes Tim, the Canadian, is a great guy and always a pillar of the farang community in Roi Et. His partner Lek (never married) is now with him in Canada and, straight from Tim's mouth they will be returning in November. Sorry but do not know the new opening hours. Italian food yes but no Pizza i maintaining the long agreement that neither place would compete against each other. They would be hard pressed to beat On's pizza anyway, probably the best in Isaan.

Agreed, they are very good

I would appreciate if someone who knows will post the hours and a short review of the new place now that it should be open and going....

O.K., with no response from others, I took it upon myself to make the trip from Kalasin to Roi Et to see for myself...

Found the place open and very busy at about 2:PM... Several tables full with what seemed to be Italian gentlemen based upon the language they were speaking... According to the signs hand written on the wall, their hours are "9:00 to 22:00", and after asking the waitress, "Yes" they still serve breakfasts items....

I ordered and enjoyed both the Penna w/tomato sauce and the Fried Meatballs w/tomato sauce... Ate all that I could, then requested the remaining be packaged to take home... Enjoyed the same for dinner last night and still have enough for lunch either today or tomorrow...

The new place (next to 101 Pizza) is now called 'Ristorante dal Perugino'

Last time I checked (last week) it still didn't have a neon sign...

It is a bar / restaurant as the new owner (named Lorenzo) probably realised that he wouldn't be able to make ends meet if he relied on food sales only.
