Hi people

Making our first trip to CR in a couple of weeks. Wonder if people could recommend places to get good, authentic Thai food. Could be restaurants, food stalls, or markets like the ones in CM where you can get great meals in those little takeaway plastic bags.

Many thanks

While Chiang Rai is part of Thailand, it distinguishes itself as having a slightly different cuisine - some of which are influenced by the Burmese. Gaeng Hang Lae is one of those dishes. Another northern dish is Khao Soy - a noodle dish with chicken or pork in thick curry-flavored soup - topped with sliced shallots. For this - go behind the Wangcome hotel. There is a shop owned by the family of the Atchan Chalermchai - the national artist - guilty for creating the White Temple wink.png .

You could also read the Good Restaurants in Chiang Rai pinned at the top of the Chiang Rai forum page.

Thanks Toybits, have tried Khao Soy a few times in Chiang Mai, and will probably try the CR version while here. What about the markets- is there anywhere that you can pick up plastic bags of takeaway Thai like CM? We'll have a kitchen in the apartment we are staying in to reheat or cook things.

CR is no different than the rest of Thailand. You can get just about anything in a plastic bag. smile.png

If you don't want to 'rough it', the Khao Soy at the mall stalls is good.
