Heavy rains bring more Phuket floods

PHUKET: -- Heavy rain overnight and this morning (August 6) brought more flooding on roads, along with water and mud in people's homes and shops.

People on Nanai Rd, Patong, woke to find a brown torrent flowing along the street, and Pang Muang Sai Gor Rd, always the first to be hit by floods in Patong, was also inundated, with the ground floor of Kathu Police Station also flooded.

Heavy flooding was also reported on Chao Fa West Rd, next to the TOT complex, and in Kan Kaeha village in Baan Lipon, off Thepkrassatree Rd.

Pol Maj Pongpichan Chayanonpirai of Patong police reported that the floods have since receded and Nani Rd is now clear of water - though not of mud. The section of Pang Muang Sai Kor Rd from Patong Hospital to the rear of Jungceylon, however, is still flooded.

That section of the road is in any case impassable to traffic, apart from motorbikes, because of ongoing work to install large sewers.

Patong's flooding usually results from a combination of high tides and heavy rain. This morning the tide reached 3.1 metres at aroung 11am, and there will be tides of 3 metres or more every day until Monday next week (August 12).

Kathu District Chief Veera Kerdsirimongkol said that he had received no reports of landslides.

Tipping it down again. Our houses down the bottom of Nanai 2 flooded at 06.00 this morning. Leaving thick mud throughout the house floors and pathways. Far too much water coming down the road and the drainage channel could not handle the flow so just backed up.

PHUKET: -- The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department on Tuesday issued a severe weather warning for people in ten provinces in the South.

People living near hillsides and waterways in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Satun, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Phatthalung should brace for heavy rain, the DPMD warned.

Chatchai Promlert, the department’s director general, said that there was a possibility of flash flooding, forest run-off and mudslides over the next four days (August 7-10.

There will also be strong wind-generated waves in the Andaman Sea. All shipping should proceed with caution and small boats should remain ashore during this period, he said.

Too much building and land clearance ensures that mud flows down many parts of Nanai road, and in the case of the new complex being built at the northern end, a gang of Burmese workers are employed full time to unblock the drains caused by mud/water run off.
