Choam Sa-Ngam / Chong Chom Border Crossing

Nice map, SantiSuk! Yeah, I figured on checking in at the Farang Connection and seeing what intel I could gather there before going further south. I'm guessing there's a songtheaw that goes to Sangkha and that something will be available there for me to make it straight to the border, but will keep in mind these other options... Oh, yeah, I always write about my trips. I just finished writing about my 4th trip to Lao, in 8 parts at: http://the-isaan.blogspot.com

Thanks for the blog & good information. I need to make a border run soon and this was just what I was looking for.

One question for people that know this area:

I have a Thai licensed motorbike (registered in my mother-in-law's name). Would I be able to ride this across the border into Cambodia if I have a permission document signed by my MIL..? I wouldn't mind taking a day or two exploring Cambodia if i had my own transpo.

Thanks.

We drove down to the border to the Choam Sa-Ngam crossing a few weeks ago so i could freshen my passport entry stamp.

All in all, it was a "no-brainer" experience. $25us for Cambodia immigration / $10 team money to the border trolls. Thanks for all the good information.

As noted on TV somewhere else, Thailand is now giving 30 day entry stamps for overland travelers (from some countries). I got one.

A couple of observations...

The busy casino is building a huge new hotel for Thai gamblers to rest their wallets. Rooms in the existing hotel are free if you buy 30K baht in gambling chips. Otherwise, it's 1000baht/night & they give you 400 baht in chips to gamble. At least this is what we were told (in Thai) at the promotion desk.

Interesting little border market. Green papayas were cheap. Three kilos for 50 baht. The ladies bought as many as they could carry back into TH.

There is a continuous flow of minibuses coming out of Surin taking gamblers to the border casino at C Chom. You can get a visa at the border but don't forget 1) photo& $20 or 1000b and 2) the implications on your Thai visa when leaving the country.

There are buses and many Cambodian taxi men waiting at the border for trips to SR.

All easily done in a day.

I need to get visa on 21febuari 2014,And today my Thaiwife call from Sweden and talk i need to go home to next mouth. Can i go to chom chom from surin to get a 15 day and after 15day can i go from surin again to chom chom and get 15day more? Do i need to go Savanaket Lao to make my visa so i can stay to next mouth 22march?Thanks if someone now.Mike

Thanks then i go chom chom do the 15day and then a 15 day visa so i can stay fore 1 mounth more.

You do not get a 15 day visa. You get a 15 day visa exempt stamp at the Choeng Chom Border Crossing by exiting Thailand, entering Cambodia and when you come back in Thailand gives you a 15 day visa exempt stamp. You will have to repeat this trip 2 times to get what you need.

Or 30 days as mentioned in post no.33 for G8 countries residents.

That's the original G7 countries which are UK,USA,Canada,Germany,France, Italy and Japan. These countries from November 1 2013 get from all land entry points a 30 day visa exempt stamp.

Hi, this is my experience in activating the second entry of my double entry tourist visa at Choam Sa-Ngam on the 12th of March 2014.

Parked the vehicle in the car park for 40 baht, not far from the border crossing.

Gave my passport to the Thai immigration officer who stamped the departure date (exit stamp) on my passport and on the T.M.6 form (the form you filled out on the plane when arriving at Suvarnabhumi airport).

The officer kept the T.M.6 form and returned my passport.

I exited Thailand and arrived at the Cambodian arrival checkpoint were i filled out a form and handed over my passport, the filled-out form, one passport photo and 1000 baht.

The officer put a one month visa sticker in my passport and also an entrance stamp containing the date of entry and the date of last day of stay in the country.

I walked around the small market area and in the new casino/hotel, about 20 minutes, then i went to the Cambodian departure checkpoint and handed over my passport and another form that i had to fill in.

They put a stamp on my passport with the departure date on it.

The officer then demanded 300 baht for the service.

I replied that i never paid before why did i have to pay now.

The officer looked at my passport and saw other Cambodian visas, scratched his head and returned my passport.

I arrived at the Thai entrance checkpoint and handed over my passport.

They took a photo of me, asked me a couple of questions and i filled out a new T.M.6 form that i handed over.

The lady officer also asked my mobile number which was strange haha!! I was never asked before.

She stamped the entrance date on the bottom of the double-entry visa just after a pen written "(2" and also put a "USED" stamp on the visa itself.

She also put an entrance stamp containing the date of entry and date of last day of stay in the country.

She returned my passport and i re-entered Thailand.

Good photo of the new hotel for the gamblers. Did you bring back any Angkor Beer or fresh French Bread ?

There is a great viewpoint at the highest point of the road on the mountain. Also the road itself is great except in some spots around Phu Sing...

Also just a few kilometers before the border crossing, on your right, there is a massive development going on... a new customs house, a big market, 100's of houses and more. I found this visual plan.

eVisa still not accepted for entry at Choam Sa-Ngam / O'Smach crossing, but you can use it for exit. Some larger land borders accept it both ways.

Here's the relevant web page which shows which borders accept what. I note that the e-visa processing fee has been raised from $5 to $7 as of mid May. Maybe some will not care less about losing a page for a sticker visa (arriving and seeking a visa on entry for he basic US$25) and some arriving at PP airport will not mind queuing to get the sticker visa. Its still just about worth the $7 premium to me when I fly into PP.

Has anyone made a border run to the Chong Jom/O Smach crossing in the last few days? I heard that recently

Thai soldiers shot at four Cambodians who strayed across the border near there and killed one woman. Have

there been any repercussions by Cambodian authorities at the border there that might affect any aspects of entry/

exit procedures? Thanks

Zero concern for crossing at Chong Chom. I live by the crossing. Tourist and hoppers are crossing over withe no problems.

Did a border run to Chang Sa Ngam the third week of March. No issues.

Drove to the border in my car. Parked. Walked across. Had lunch at the casona (2nd Floor in the back--buffet & snack bar). Walked back.

Hot & dusty. Market was mostly closed mid day.

The grumpy Cambodian border guard did not even ask for $10 "tea money."

Back to my house in about an hour.

Does that mean they finally fixed the road from Highway 24 Kwaibah?tongue.png

Have not a clue. Nobody and I mean nobody is doing any reporting on that crossing. Guess I may have to do a recon.

I frequently use this road to make deliveries to the border. I was there again this morning. Road is great all the way from Route 24 to the border. No more pot holes. Tarseal most of the way, with concrete through some of the villages. At the border it is all very clean and green with the whole market demonished. It is extremely quiet on the Thai side. I don't know what it is like on the Cambodian side.

That should be good for a couple of months then.
