Hi Folks

My new model Toyota Vigo (4 door), has a lot of wind noise from the rear....(much more than the previous model which I recently sold)

I have tried insulating behind the rear seat (and under it) but the noise is still excessive, so I am guessing that it is coming from the door seals.

I spoke to Toyota about the problem, but I think that I was talking to the wall, for the negative reaction I encountered ("they are all like that")

Does anyone know if there is any firm specialising in the upgrading of door seals ?, in order to help quieten, if not eliminate this problem

Many thanks

I have one of those Vigo's and there is no excessive wind noise. If it is a new car definitely a job for Toyota you should not have to mess about fitting sound proofing material or looking for upgrade door seals.

Get some one sitting in the back while driving to locate the exact source of the noise.

Sure the windows are FULLY closed?

Try Nissan Sonata it's like Benz with Japanese car price.

Wow, very helpfull reply to OP's problem, why on earth do you say that, OP asks in East and you answer in West? Some of us prefer trucks as they better can take pot holes and are generally more sturdy than sedans and you get a lot for your money.

I agree with Daffy D, it is warrenty stuff and I could imagine Toyata Pattaya are not very helpfull, try another dealer, warrenty is country wide.

I don't have any wind noise in my truck (Ranger) even at high speeds +150 km/h.

We recently had a vigo 4x4 loan truck at my work and the wind noise was terrible, i thought it was with the carryboy on the back, but got our new 4 door vigo pick up without the carryboy - exact same terrible wind noise!!

Bad build quality i would say, when you shut the door on a vigo it has a tinny sort of sound, when you shut the door on a D-max it has more of a solid clunk.

Just turn the radio up!!

I have had 2 Vigos, the first one is 4 years old & is ok but the back seat in the new one is much noisier than the old one.

It must be a common fault with the new model.

If anyone is in doubt, sit in the back seat at 100 kph & see what we mean, very noisy.

Did you try to change the angulation of the radio antenna? It might sound stupid, but as it is the only difference I can see between the Champ model and the older one (which I own, and don't have this noise problem), the wind flow around it could be at the origin of the problem.

My 2007 has no wind noise and seeing that they are the same except the front end panels perhaps wind noise ''appears to be coming from the rear. BUT, would put my money on door seals or any ad-ons you have added.

Just for a test, buy some of that thin sticky back foam and stick it where the door seals meet the body, close the doors and take it for a spin, if no noise then the seals are not meeting up with the body somewhere.

The topic does seem to be wider than just looking for someone to fix the problem in Pattaya, I'll move the topic to the motoring forum.

Experiencing the same issue with my 4 week old Prerunner.. I had a Hilux back in 2007 and it didn't have the noise as far as I can remember.. it some sort howling / whistling noise starting around 95 km/h and up.. Went to the dealer and took the mechanic with me, he also found it to be noisy and looked at the seals.., 10 minutes later, when he couldn't find what was wrong he said "thamada" krub. sad.png

To test the door seals, place a piece of paper at various points round the seals and close the door.

Try to pull the paper out with the door closed and if it comes easily the seal is not good and that could be your problem.

Adjusting the door hanging could be an answer.

Did you try to change the angulation of the radio antenna? Yes this could also be a possibility, it has been known.

I am also surprised that so many other owners are finding the same problem....

Mine came from Toyota at Rayong....(who are more approachable than the Pattaya people where I bought my last Vigo from)......

I too took the mechanic out.....same story "they are all like this".....I said well my last model wasn't,...but that fell on deaf ears too.

Yes I know that it is basically a "Truck", but as it is top of the range at just over a million Baht I would have expected the build quality to be better than it is....

As I said in my post....originally I thought that the noise may have been coming from behind the rear seat, so I found a place on Sukhumvit which sold underfelt which was perfect for the job....it was quite a simple job to remove the rear seat and take off the rear panel to fit it, and at the same time I fitted some under the rear seat carpet.....this has definitely taken the "drumming" out of the back of the car, but alas the wind noise is still there....

From looking at the rubber seals, they seem to be too flimsy and also are not tightly fitted against the door pillars.

So I guess that I will need to confront Toyota again.....maybe if enough owners experiencing this complain, Toyota may take notice and modify the seals......but I won't hold my breath.

Incidentally, I find that the "new style" suspension isn't as good as the old model......also the diesel consumption seems higher.......apart from that, I still like them

Thanks to everyone for your input....it has been very enlightening

p.s. The Dealership at Rayong (36 Road close to Makro) has plenty of new Vigos' for sale on their forecourt......no sign of a 6 month wait which Pattaya told me.

By the way......

I never get upset with any adverse comments......it's all part of the Forum banter.....winding each other up...

And one of the things that I love about the Forum

Most of us on here are retired (and on the last lap of life)

So if we don't laugh at ourselves now.....maybe we never will

Did the test and could pull out the paper with minimal force.. Can somebody do this with a normal sedan or any other truck as well., curious to the results and ready to escalate the issue to Toyota..

Tried this with my BT50, could pull out the paper, but not easily, it was clearly properly sealed.

It's a 1 month wait with the Kalasin Toyota dealer.

I was about to buy a new Toyota pick-up but in view of all these comments am wondering about Isuzu Highlander.

Have been driven around in a few recently and they have been quiet and comfortable. They also have good torque and power.

Not sure about the bodywork but everything looks good with 125K (Km's)on the clock.

A Nissan Sonata ? I guess they made only one of those, because all the other Sonata's are Hyundai's and from Korea.

I thought about an Isuzu when I first arrived here.....I found that the seats weren't as comfortable as the Vigo...and I travelled in a Pals MU7 when it was new.....then again after he had owned it for a year and it rattled like a box of spanners.....in fairness I do not know how well he was treating it.

I will say that when I sold my last Vigo after 2 years, it made very good money....surprisingly from a dealer

It's true that historically Toyota don't depreciate as quickly but I am buying for the long term so resale not an issue.

Arrgghh, what to do?

Long time since I've actually done the paper test, with modern cars never seemed the need.

I seem to have been lucky and got one of the good cars without wind noise, even at 120/140 kph there is no excessive noise and no problem having a normal conversation.

So thought I'd give it a try to set a sort of "control" of how easily the paper should pull out. I used a sheet of A4 copy paper and holding it with just one hand it would just slightly distort before starting to slip out. Once it started to slide it came fairly easily.

So there you have it a standard to check your seals by.

Thanks to everybody for their interesting answers and suggestions.

I guess that my next step is to tackle the supplying dealership again.... should I get another negative (or couldn't care less) response, I will e-mail Toyota Japan and get their view.

Watch this space lol

I have a 2012 hilux vigo G model and have no issues with wind noise at all! No real complaints so far, and was bought in March 2012.
