Woman Arrested For 'Counterfeit' Winning Lottery

BANGKOK: -- Nonthaburi police arrested Kalasint woman for allegedly counterfeiting lottery tickets and claiming the prize.

Ms. Tawee Sawanate, 62, from Yang Talad district, Kalasin province, traveled to the Government Lottery Office to claim the first prize worth THB 2 million with her lottery ticket.

She was promptly arrested when the Office realised that the ticket was fake.

An official from the Lottery office said that the ticket had been altered from 249545 to 647882.

Ms. Tawee denied she had modified the tickets, claiming that she bought the tickets from a lottery vendor at a bus terminal located in Kalasin province for THB 110 per ticket.

The tickets were left in her pocket until she checked the lottery draw results on 7 October. Once she found out she won the first prize, Ms. Tawee said, she phoned her relatives and traveled with 5 of them to Nonthaburi to claim the prize.

However, police officers questioned her testimony and pressed charge against Ms. Tawee, who makes a living by selling chilli, accusing her of counterfeit.

The penalty for the charge carries 6 months to 5 years in prison and THB 1,000 to 10,000 fines.

Many many winners every day! At least that's where the people claim the money comes from. One guy close by me light firework at least once a month celebrating he again won the jackpot. I am sure there is no connection to the rumour that he is drug dealer....

The first giveaway was that the winning numbers on her lottery ticket were written in crayon. The second was when she declared herself the winner by shouting "Yaba Yaba Do"

Yes they do, I won a small prize on the lottery here some time ago and I know of others who have won larger amounts more recently.

but they sell for more, special numbers for a lot more,whats the top prize here?

2 M Bht , for the same price ticket in UK and I am sure other countries you can

win multi millions .

With the tickets going through so many hands,each getting a bht or 2,no wonder

they have to sell them for more,then if you are lucky you have to pay commission

to claim your prize money,the whole things corrupt from beginning to end,and why

do they need so many girls to pick the winning numbers, instead of having a machine

were there is virtually no chance of cheating.

so it's been proven the numbers were altered..and she claims she bought the ticket from a vendor,..which if true means that the vendor supposedly, altered the numbers, before the draw, with the winning numbers....Amazing that he was able to predict the winning numbers,.....wonder what his choices are for next week

Right. They knew it was a fake coz tickets with first prize are not for sale. It has been revealed already that it's all manipulated. Why they still bother with this scam..called lottery I don't know.

This is all so true.

What gets me, is everytime they see a foreigner relaxing or dining the seller quickly make their way in hopes of selling a ticket,

yet it's printed on the back of each ticket that in order to claim the prize you must provide a copy of your Thai ID card,

not driver license as I found out first hand. Foreigners are not eligible to claim any prize money, they must go through a Thai,

who can provide a copy of their Thai ID card.

I've never understood why a commission has to be given to the seller to claim the prize either...?

It like if the buyer is lucky to win something, he/she must then share the proceeds with the seller.

Give me a break!

And apparently the old number was still visible or at least visible with a rub or two. And beneath each printed digit the number, as a word in English , is printed. I wonder if she changed the numerals and left the words.
