I need to cool a landing on the first (american second) floor which cannot be enclosed. Since it's open aspect precludes an a/c I suppose the only option is one of those coolers (with or without the light water spray). Does anyone have an opinion on these? On their effectiveness or any disadvantages I may not have considered? Or on my objective generally?

Perhaps a vent-fan or grill on your loft-access hatch in the ceiling, to draw the hot air from the landing into the roof space, or a simple electric-fan to keep the air moving ?

Thanks for those responses already.

I should have explained first that it is a little bigger than a mere landing. Almost room-sized with a wide corridor going off to one side (and of course the stairs down. I intend to set up my music equipment (headphones, amp, etc there so that with a sofa etc it will serve as a small study/music room. In the summers it can get extremely hot and of course for my purposes I would want it comfortably cool. It does have windows or net doors around and so there would/should be cross ventilation; but I thought I'd give that a boost, and a water-spray cooler/fan came to mind.

Am very open to also putting plants around, but would they make a noticeable difference to the temperature?

I guess what would be very helpful to know is if someone has one of these coolers or spray fans and how effective they found them.

Doesn't sound like a good idea around your electronics, they don't like water.

Yes, that thought went through my mind too. But I thought that keeping the distance and direction of the fan somewhat away from the gear might be ok. I shall consult the hifi equipment seller about this too.
