40 percent say court ruling won't resolve stand-off: poll
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- About two in five Thais do not expect the current political conflict to end with the Constitutional Court's ruling on the charter amendment bill that tried to push for elected senators.

The survey by Suan Dusit Pollster of Rajabhat Suan Dusit University found that 40.54 per cent of the respondents did not expect the conflicts to end because of the ruling.

The survey also found that 32.91 per cent of the respondents did not think the ruling would lead to political violence while 14.52 per cent said the ruling was expected and all sides should respect it.

The survey was held among 1,283 people nationwide from Wednesday to yesterday.

According to the poll, 39.26 per cent had no feelings about the ruling because it could not solve political problems while 31.40 per cent were dissatisfied because the ruling failed to spell out penalties and 29.34 per cent were relieved that no violence had occurred.

The survey found that 48.35 per cent expected the turmoil due to polarised politics to continue.

It's hard to see what (if anything) will end this crisis.

Mass dissolution and fresh elections... Nope, it will just reignite as soon as one government gets in and tries to put a bill through the house. Because Thaksin will be there hovering in the background with the intent of destroying politics and democracy in Thailand because of his petulant attitude towards not being able to return as top dog again.

Taking the opposition out of the game by throwing key figures such as Abhisit and Suthep in jail... Nope, that will just antagonize the people currently on the street and end up bringing more out.

Heavy handed crackdown on the protesters... Nope, that will just be a re-staging of the 2010 calamity.

Coup with a vacuum period... Probably the only way to let the dust settle. But the military need to set the stage before new elections to eradicate all political corruption and vote buying so there is a true government with a true mandate to govern. Also taking advantage of the interim period to get the NACC to get rid of the 25,000 pending cases and process all cases with compelling evidence and hand out sentences on a fast track basis with mass confiscation of assets and hefty prison sentences. The rest can be thrown out for lack of evidence and start the new era with an empty filing cabinet, and ready to come down hard on all new offences (including vote buying) with a faster more streamlined system.

A well placed bullet... May have to happen one day despite the fallout.
