Chiang Mai to Bangkok with my puppy

We are flying home to the USA with our little mexican hairless. United booked us from Bangkok to San Francisco and then code shared us from Chiang Mai to Bangkok via Thai Air. I go over to the airport yesterday only to discover they do not allow dogs in the cabin. My dog is NOT cargo. Besides which even in the "heated" compartment it would kill him. So I called United and cancelled the flight. Rebooked the flight from BKK to SFO but cannot find a domestic carrier who will allow my "no fur" baby in the cabin. The train still ain't running and I've been told that the VIP buses won't allow dogs on the buses.

Is there a van that makes regular scheduled runs to Bangkok? We can book a car and driver but at 12,000 baht it's 1/4th the cost of a ticket to the USA!! Any and all suggestions (other than selling him to the dog trade) would be appreciated. I don't have a thai license nor a current IDL so driving myself isn't an option.

Quite strange, we always travel TG Cnx to Paris with our ChiHuaHua (4-5 Kg) in the cabin.

Do you have all the paperwork for the pet ?

You need an exit permit from the quarantine Station in Chiang Mai.

^ I sometimes wished that posts came with subtitles.

Anyway, an easy and perhaps fun way would be to get a one-way car rental. Then just take it easy, take plenty stops for the dog to walk and sniff about, then return the car in Bangkok.

US license will be just fine.

If really worried she could just get it converted into a Thai license, though that takes a lot more time and a little more money than the worst case of having to pay a police officer some baht. (Very unlikely, but apparently it does happen).

Oh yeah I have OCD when it comes to the documentation regarding my "baby". The first thing I did was find out what forms I needed to take him home with us. I am still somewhat concerned about what I am going to need to bring him into US. He has a pet passport, rabies titre, will have screw worm test and certificate of health to fly.

You might need a microchip embed. We had to do that for our cat when we wanted to take her to Japan. Also, blood tests that spanned 6mos, and of course the exit permit from the Thai Ag people. But then Thai Air let us bring her into the cabin as long as we were one of the first 6 people to request that.

He has a microchip. When I went to the Thai air office at CM airport they said they didn't allow animals in the cabin. Should I risk it?

Only if you are willing to accept that the dog ends up in the designated cargo area for the duration.

BTW, different people belonging to the very same organization in Thailand tend to give different answers based on regulations made up on the spot in the absence of actual knowledge of what the organization's real policies are.. So with that in mind, you could do a 'test run' today/tomorrow where you put the animal in the container you plan to bring and walk up to the check-in desk and then actually ask if you can take him carry-on inside the cabin. Those are the staff that deal with this every day, and the ones who's decision matters.

Were I in your shoes now, I'd go in person to the Thai Air office, ask for a manager (not a desk clerk,) and discuss the problem. Managers generally know the rules and regulations, and have enough corporate 'power' that they have no need to exert any in a show of strength over customers to make themselves feel good. Desk clerks, on the other hand, have very little power in the company and LOVE to show customers how much muscle they can flex.. over the only ones they are able flex over. When the manager tells you that you CAN bring your pet into the cabin, request a short paragraph written on Thai Air letterhead paper to that effect that you can show to the check-in people. No room for mix-ups that way. (Well... less room for mix-ups actually.)

OP, you have a serious problem, not the dog. How can you possibly be so self-absorbed to think that your problem is important in the world today ?!

Do you have to fly by air? No. And by their rules, which are not always silly. But it is not convenient for you.

You are not concerned for the animal. You are concerned about yourself and your convenience and blaming others for not catering to you!

PS I love pets of my own which I love dearly.

Well I am afraid that MarcoFrenchPolo is right, Thai Airways does not allow Pets in Cabin any longer,

and after searching for all CNX-BKK available airlines, could not find any airline accepting Pets in Cabin.

Here's the link : http://www.pettravel.com/airline_pet_rules/thai_airways.cfm

If you go on Thai Airways site the regulations are also clear, No Pets in Cabin.

On this same page, it states;

If your pet is too large to fit under the seat, it is an animal other than a dog or cat, or if it is a very long flight, Thai Airways may transport your pet in the cargo section of the aircraft according to its regulations. This section of the cargo department has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin.

Pets Allowed: Dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and ferrets. No sick or pregnant pets are permitted. There are no birds, rodents, reptiles, skunks, minks, soft-shelled turtles permitted.

"Under the seat" would allude to 'in the cabin.' That seems to be at odds with 'no pets in the cabin.' Also, in the section about pets as cargo, it allows birds, so clearly different from the 'pets allowed' in the previous section. I wonder if this is just another typical 'we'll make the rules depending on the day' situation.

OMG, Mapguy, you really should be banned. It's bad enough that you make insensitive, judgmental comments about entire segments of the expat population -- like older, single expats on limited income living in 40 sq. meter guest house rooms, but to directly insult a specific member, a lady with just 14 posts and fairly new to the forum is just beyond the pale.

Let's see, you posted at 12:55 pm AND you edited that post. That means you had time in your cave to re-read your post, take another sip of red wine and think about what you'd written before deciding to "improve" on your insult to this lady who clearly loves a pet with special needs due to his lack of fur.

I know this lady and her dog. Neither are deserving of your insults. Instead you should be offering to drive them to Bangkok since you obviously have W-A-Y too much free time on your hands.

Edit: On no, wait, that might actually constitute doing something concrete to help a fellow expat -- something YOU'D never do!

Please read the original question. I didn't ask how do I get around the rules that say I can't take my dog in the cabin of a plane. I asked if there were a cheaper alternative than 12,000 baht for a private car hire. I already acknowledged that Thai air said no dogs in the cabin. Other members said it may be possible. (TIT) I don't have to fly and it is obvious that I have explored other options to the point where I know I can't take him on a bus; the trains are not running and I can't drive legally in Thailand. I was hoping that people knew of an alternative. Maybe somebody had a friend or relative who could give me some pointers?

I am not asking for people to cater to me. Quite the opposite, I am saying tell me what the rules are and I will follow them. No dogs in cabins? Fine, I am not flying. I'll take a train, bus or private van. Where did I say the rules were silly? I can understand people's objections to pets in the cabins. Particularly people with allergies. AGAIN, I didn't say I wanted Thai Air to change their rules I just wanted to know if they were the actual rules or if they were a clerk exercising their power - as somebody who has lived in Thailand for a while Mapguy you must know that here the rules are the rules at that moment in time and only at that moment in time. Otherwise same same but different.

I'd like to know where in ANYTHING I said I vaguely implied that I wanted others to cater to me? I appreciate deeply other members telling me about the microchip and documentation. I could have missed something and been in deep doo doo. Again, I'm meeting the rules and regulations NOT asking others to cater to me. I could have showed up at BKK and said "you solve it". THAT would have been expecting people to cater to me. Amazingly many times the thais actually DO somehow work it out. But I am not interested in imposing on busy airport personnel.
