It looks like I might need to see a doctor about blood pressure and being new to the Nakhon Sawan and the KampangPhet area I do not what doctors or hospitals I should go to. Any information greatly appreciated.

thanks

Nakhon Sawan's hospital is a teaching hospital for nurses and probably administers doctor training as well. The hospital in Kamphaeng Phet doesn't.

There are also military facilities around Nakhon Sawan which usually means that local doctors, trained to higher standards are accessible. Many, if not most Thai military doctors are reservists and receive heavy investments for training. Meaning they are more topical with current treatments.

Having had no experience of either of your options, Nakhon Sawan would be my choice for the reasons stated above.

If Phitsonulok was an added option it would be my recommendation. For all the reasons above and experience.

Wherever you go: Arrive early and be prepared for quite a long wait. If your Thai's not too good, avoid going alone if you can.

I wasn't going to put any more posts on TV but I think this is important.

My Daughter was born with several small hopes in her heart all now cured. Used to use a BKK children's hospital they turned out to be at best rubbish went to one in N/S also rubbish due to the fact that we were let down several time with prior booking, turned up only to find that the doctor hadn't even bothered to turn up, had they phoned us to inform well no, if they cant do even that what the treatment would have been like Buddha only knows.

In the end went to Phitsanulok good you had better believe it they are the top training one for Thailand, most of their doctors have been trained in the U.S.A. I know it's not local but if you want to come out alive well worth the trip.

Sorry don't know the name of the one I used as not in Thailand a present but if you travel to Pitso from N/S it's the big one on right just before the T/Lights that you turn right at to Pitso airport.

Sorry J.C your right about the nurses bit but for Doctor's that's a no no. Spot on about the one in K.P.P though you only go there for minor scrapes and to Die.

As I said, I've never tried the hospitals in either area. They aren't my closest options anyway. I've always based my choice using the teaching and military connections as a guide here. A guy who worked in the Thai military once told me that this was the best way to make a judgement.

We've used Pisanuvej and the state hospital in Phitsonulok and found both to be okay. In fact nearly all the consultant doctors at Pisanuvej are based at the state hospital. Many procedures are in fact carried out there, for patients who are paying Pisanuvej's fees. They ship you between two hospitals in an ambulance.

It's good that you managed to ensure your daughter was okay. Added drama is the last thing you need at such times.

The best hospital in N/S is said to be the big one next to Sawan Park. The military Hospital just south of the river I have had very good reports on, an Aussie has just had hip surgery there and he says its better than he would get in Oz.

In the end what I think it boils down to is this, you can go to the best hospital with the best doctors but if you dont get them what can you do and how would you know, hope to be lucky that the best one is one duty when you call.

My ex gf had studied nursing at Philok. Later she was selected for further training as a ICU cardiac specialist nurse (is there such a thing?) for training in BKK. The same hospital a most prominent Thai citizen lives in for a few years by now. Only one nurse was given that chance per year from the province or region. According to her the public hospital (provincial) in Philok was top notch and what she called famous in Thailand. From what she told me I gathered that it also functions as a Universityhospital and is therefore probably pretty much current as far as treatments and equipment go. She ranked it higher than private places in the area.

Sorry that this is a bit vague and general. However it comes from a very competent lady who is part of a family dynasty of nurses.

Having had first hand experience on several occasions of said University hospital I can only agree, from the moment you walk in you will feel confident. Doctor's all speak good English you are even invited to look round the operation room's and in our case could dress up and attend your child's operation. Wife did, I had to dog sit.

All the others N/S BKK are at best second/third class. K.P.P would only use that for my dog, so give them a wide margin if you want the best Pitso is the only one, but it's your life so up to you.

If you had a cardiac arrest, I'm pretty sure you would be very appreciative of the hospital services available in Kamphaeng Phet. If you're lucky they could stabilize you for transfer to another hospital. Should you wish (or were able) to do so. In those circumstances, it's any port in a storm.

Hospitals anywhere are like insurance policies/companies. You never realy know how good they are until you need them. They may have the ultimate listing of capable consultanats/doctors, but are they on duty in your hour of need?

I m not living in Philok but when I stayed in Tak I visited for private reasons the local provincial hospital which seemed to do OK under the circumstances. It was shortly after Mr. T.'s 30 baht reform and the place was going bankrupt and forced to cut corners as good as i could in order to survive. Accounts were in a miserable state as the government had not provided additional funds at that time. I also saw Sukkothai which seemed to be better - but that's coming from an ignorant user's perspective. The nurses told me that Sukkothai was better than Tak though.

From all that gossiping with nurses I gathered that they are a great source of info on hospitals. They know each other from their studies. Later they were assigned to their various home towns or places where they had married. Most of them stay in touch and call each other in case of medical emergencies. So they trade infos on physicians, equipment, current status of a place. When we were to visit a sick aunt my ex gf called the hospital nurse - not the doctor - and learned that she was in a coma and would not recover. I doubt that a doctor would have surrendered such info over the phone to an unknown person. Nurses were also rather blunt about the qualities of some docs and backed that up with stories of their failures - sometimes costing lives. This may sound somewhat scary - the good part was that they had a very clear understanding what was working and what was not. Cancer treatment, for instance, might necessitate a BKK facility for instance.

From the above I gathered it might be a good idea to maintain friendly relations with a nurse and have this kind of back-up. If the friend has no direct knowledge she has a phone book full of valuable contacts.

Perhaps a sticky with addresses of hospitals might come in handy once members feel really sick and like going to a hospital.

If you had ever been to K.P.P hospital you would know to never use it, there's peep's sleeping on ever inch of tile with little or no service, if you just want a bone fixed, jab, or some tablets just about ok, anything else and you would have more chance getting it sorted at the local vet's.

We do have a private one here but they never have any doctors on site EVER. So if any of my mob need anything done it's 130km one way trip to Pitso but I wouldn't care if it was 500km as I have 100% confidence in them.

As I said before you only go to K.P.P. hospital to die.

There are idiots on Thaivisa, but in my experience, they are very much a small minority.

Agreed, but the supply of them seems to be increasing, they replicate it seems.
