HUA HIN: -- The Swedish Association of Hua Hin, Sanuk – Swedish School Thailand and Dusit Thani Hua Hin are arranging the traditional celebration of Sankta (Saint) Lucia Day. It is a special festivity for the Swedish community in Hua Hin, connecting to a long tradition during the darkest winter month back in the Nordic homeland. The celebration is open for all nationalities to join. This will take place on Friday, 13th December from 7.00 PM.

St Lucia’s Day – what is that?
Saint Lucia´s day is celebrated most commonly in Italy and in Scandinavia with each emphasising a different aspect of the story. In traditional celebrations, Saint Lucia comes as a young woman. It is one of the few saint days observed in Scandinavia.

On the 13th of December in each Swedish community, a young girl will be selected as Saint Lucia. She dresses in a long white gown with a red ribbon tied at the waist, wearing a crown of fresh greens and candles on her head. In a procession, she enters a dimmed room with appropriately attired boys and girls, to the harmonious chords of a Lucia song.

Alongside Midsummer, the Lucia celebrations represent one of the foremost cultural traditions in Sweden, with their clear reference to life in the peasant communities of old times: darkness and light, cold and warmth. Her feast originality coincided with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year before calendar reforms, so her feast day has become a festival of light.

Everyone is welcome to Dusit Thani to celebrate the Lucia Festival together with Swedish and all other nationalties.

Dusit Thani offers bus transport from the Thanawit Hotel, opposite the clock tower in Hua Hin city at 16.30 or 17.30 then returning at 21.00 or 22.00. Price Baht 50 one way.
