Aaron - an additional thought: you might like to write a letter to the editor (Bangkok Post and/or Nation) about your experience. They will withold your name on request and you need not give any identifying details, sufficient to say an immediate family member required emergency hospitalization and then describe the horrific behavior over the bill. The reason I suggest this is that Bumringrad's management do not care in the least about human welfare but they care a lot about their profit and by extension their image. The potential revenue lost by bad publicity would more than offset the amount of your bill. The only way they are going to modify their behavior and attitude is if they see a financial incentive for doing so. The extremely low noncollection rate you quoted is in itself proof of strong0-arm tactics: no hospital achieves that high a collection rate without resorting to pretty harsh and extreme measures. Which they are likely to contnue unless and until it comes back to haunt them. So if you feel so inclines, a letter to the eds would be a public service.

Note: my comment about lack of concern for human welfare refers solely to the managemnet. Most of the health care professionals there are skilled and dedicated folk.
