Maggot flies for healing wounds

Featured Replies

Father in law has a leg wound which re-opens itself again and again.

No treatment helped.I found this about Moggot flies http://goo.gl/xNsgTX

Seems worth a try. How to get them? Anyone who has bee treated with these charmers?

Also working in diabetes situations http://goo.gl/xNsgTX

What FIL needs is a proper diagnosis of the condition.

The "maggots" used in some conditions are "special", sterile and not available for purchase by the public in Thailand or indeed any other country that I am aware of.

Thanks Sceptic11. Of course you are right. Was told the application is done with a special plaster containing larva's of Maggot flies. No intend to play Uncle doctor but want to gather info sufficient info to present the idea to the hospital.

Sounds like FIL has an infection, - get him to a doctor, before the folk remedies make it worse.

And not in the 30 Baht public hospital....

My wives sister had the same (diabetics) for a long time, till I decided to treat her with correct antibiotics and in 1 week was everything OK.

Hospital didn't give antibiotics only cleaned it until it was almost a sepsis.

This "therapy" is only used in selective cases and does not "heal" wounds. The "therapy" debrides or cleans wounds which then often require skin grafting.

A chronic wound such as described by the OP is likely to be associated with varicos veins or a diabetic ulcer which present challenges !

He says it is not diabetes, has been under treatment for 10 years. Docs say he has 3 holes in the bone , not cancerous.

Guess my beetles won´t do it. Was sent to Surin hospital where the head doc took an interest in his case.

Question : what are the rights of a 30b farmer ? Getting complete diagnosis plus past treatment report to show it to Bumrungrad (or?)) at own expense for another opinion?

Sounds as if FIL has a chronic osteomyelitis .

If that is so then treatment will be very challenging and the condition may never be "cured"

A private consultation with an orthopedic surgeon will secure an opinion as to treatment options.

Khun Sceptic11 I think you are on the right track, compliment !

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/osteomyelitis/DS00759/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs

and here with some xrays http://goo.gl/Rrxbvl sound like a tough cooky.

Of course, I don´t know what has been tried, the docs may have come to the same conclusion, however the treatment is only working for some months before it starts all over again.

I don´t think we don´t need to fish I the dark any further, will try to get something in writing from the hospital. Thanks a lot!

See if you can get a copy of the latest x-ray together with a summery of the records before seeking a second opinion.

If not do not be concerned an x-ray will not be expensive and FIL can tell his story !

My grandmother suffered from bad varicose veins, after everything else failed, the NHS tried maggots.

It was back in the 70's, i was too young to remember too much, but they were under her regular bandages munching away on the dead tissue.
