Songkhla proves most popular as site for factories in the South

BANGKOK, 6 Dec 2013 (NNT) - Mr. Nattapon Nattasomboon, Director General of the Department of Industrial Works (DIW) has revealed a total of 8,887 new factories were established in the 14 provinces of the South during January to November this year.

According to Mr. Nattapon, the figure shows an increase of 6.24% from that of last year, while the employment rate jumped by 3.64% with over 217,000 workers being hired, bringing in 260 billion baht in investment, an increase of 7.37%.

He said Songkhla attracted the highest number of new factories with nearly 1,800 more sites requiring an investment of 89 billion baht, a jump of 8.02%. Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani are the second and third most popular provinces, registering more than 1,400 and 1,200 new factories respectively.

The Director General said the reason why those provinces have attracted such a large number of investors is that they are big cities with an easy access to marine & land transportation for exports. Most of the new industrial factories in the southern region are dealing with processed agricultural products and seafood.

Rectors’ House dissolution call draws protest from lecturers

IMGP9126-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The call of the Council of University Presidents of Thailand (CUPT) for the prime minister to dissolve the House of Representatives and for a non-partisan interim government drew strong opposition from lecturers who claimed the call did not represent all university lecturers.

In a petition signed by a group of 135 university lecturers, it strongly criticized the CUPT saying it did not represent the stance of all university lecturers but of their owns.

It said that the call for the House dissolution, and for the formation of a non-partisan interim government by CUPT president Somkit Lertpaithoon clearly showed that its stance was in line with the demands of the anti-government People’s Committee for National Reform for Complete Democracy (PCNRCD) led by Suthep Thuagsuban.

The lecturers said the rectors’ proposals were not based on discussions and consultations with university academics, but on the rectors’ meeting.

They said the rectors’ call for a neutral interim government was against the principles of the constitution.

Academics and students propose solution for Thailand

BANGKOK, 6 December 2013 (NNT) — Academics and students have held a seminar to brainstorm solutions to Thailand's political deadlock.

A number of academics and students from various institutes yesterday joined the seminar to brainstorm solutions to Thailand's political rift. Many ideas were put forth, with some saying that a "people's council" was possible, while others said otherwise, and proposed parliament dissolution instead.

Students from Chiang Mai University proposed that there should be a reform of the country's law in order to reduce tension between political parties.

Meanwhile, an economist pointed out that Thailand's democracy has been constantly developing over the years, given the fact that the country has seen more freedom of expression and acceptance of different opinions than in the past.

However, the amnesty law is still worrisome, as it seems to have been overused, added the economics professor,

BAAC's credit loans reach annual target

BANGKOK, 6 December 2013 (NNT) — Farmers taking out loans through agricultural credit cards have pushed the amount of credit loans well beyond the target of 7 billion baht.

Executive Vice President of Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) Chaiwat Pokpong revealed that the bank's overall credit loan from April 2013 until now had a higher-than-expected increase of 10%, or approximately 7 billion baht.

Most of the credit loans are from farmers, which constitute approximately 20 billion baht. Moreover, the bank has increased the credit allowance of 60% to 70%.

Mr. Chaiwat went on to say that the BAAC had not lowered its interest rates despite the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) resolution to reduce the policy rate by 0.25% - the reason being the BAAC has more expenditures on debt collectors than other commercial banks.
