Abhisit Vejjajjiva is an honorable man and there is zero flight risk from him as he knows he will have his day in court.

Thaksin Shinawatra OTOH is not cut from the same cloth as AV.

He fled after posting bail knowing he was guilty and would be found so by the courts.

had Thaksin stayed in the country and gone to court, what makes you think he would ever have seen the inside of a prison cell? Thaksin is not quite as blue blood as Abhisit but still elite.

The Red Bull heir is from the same bolt of cloth as Thaksin.

PTP leadership should do everything in their power to get these charges dropped, and do so publicly. No way in the world are they going to prove that Abhisit gave orders to shoot to kill. Suthep, who knows, but get ahead of this and do it for the stated purpose of fairness, reconciliation.

It could be said that the police were responsible because of their inaction.

It was students and red shirts that inflicted violence. It was a student that was shot dead first after a number of hours of fighting between the two groups.

It is a good thing the amnesty did not went through. The main beneficiaries would have been scrupulous people like Abhisit and Suthep. The very people complaining the most about police brutality ... really. Snipers would make it 1-1 if someone took out Suthep. His family and friends would not complain, he did the same.

Criminal Court allows bail for Abhisit

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court late this afternoon allowed bail for Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva indicted for his role in the fatal military crackdown of red-shirt protesters in May 2010.

Mr Abhisit’s lawyer Pundit Siriphan said that Mr Abhisit has insisted to the court judge on his innocence in performing his duty and denied all charges imposed on him by the attorney-general.

After hearing his defense and the posting of 1.8 million baht as a surety for bail, the court allowed his bail for temporary release without fixing any conditions.

But the court appointed March 24 as the date to examine additional required documents.

Abhisit left the court immediately after his bail was allowed without giving any interview to reporters.

Interesting that the court will wait till after the proposed elections! Is there a possibility that the case will be thrown out before then? If it was an attempt by PTP to have their main opponent behind bars before the elections, It has failed.

Does Thaksin really want this trial to go ahead knowing it can do as much damage to him if not more so than to Abhisit? If it is in the courts discretion, and assuming they find Abhisit not guilty, will they want to charge the Red Shirt leadership and Thaksin for sedition and terrorism for their parts in the 2010?

Well Thaksin ought to really be facing premeditated murder charges for 2500 extra-judicial slaughterings in his war on drugs.

Every man is entitled to a fair trial, and that is a lot more than Thaksin gave those victims, and did it clean up drugs?... NO!

Most of the drugs in Thailand are being moved about by the police.

If Thaksin was to die tomorrow, you would all be in the poo as you would'nt be able to defend anything whatsoever.

Well someone was responsible for the army firing on the protesters, one of the victims an unarmed nurse attending to a wounded man. I really don't think it could have been Abisit, but Suthep is a different "kettle of fish" or could it have been the army commander, has anybody asked them.

There must be some kind of a record, what exactly did Suthep tell the army to do.

Funny thing is, the PhuaThai's much maligned amnesty bill would have exonerated Abhisit and Suthep for these murder charges, it also would have excused Sohndi and the other yellow shirts charged for the airport takeover in 2008..and of courcse our friend Thaksin Shinawatra.. I think some of these people may live to regret that it was killed.

You make an interesting point. The reason Suthep got so many on the streets is because the demonstrators want the same as so many on this forum often opine in terms akin to a pipe dream - that all politicians tainted with misconduct should be convicted. But as we know, this is the last thing that any player from either side with any power wants.

I'm only going on hearsay here, but didn't Thaksin's clampdown on drugs result in over 1,000 deaths in 2002? If so, why isn't he being tried for murder?

Thaksin's war on drugs was very popular at the time and I seem to remember it had backing from the highest possible person in Thailand. I doubt very much it will be brought up again.
