postage customs in Bangkok or Chiang Mai?

Hi there folks,

I had two packages sent by USPS from the USA (as I have before a few times) and received one last week, but the second one, according to my USPS tracking number, has been sitting in Thai customs for almost a week. I had some DVD's in the box amongst other things, maybe they are looking at them and other things that might qualify for customs duty. I have not received any mail notice saying I have to pay fees either. But I cannot figure out where the box is, would it be in Bangkok customs or Chiang Mai? And if in either, does anyone know a number I can call to find out whats going on? (Where they speak english)
I think Prasing is my closest post office here in Chiang Mai, is it worth physically going down there? Last time I did, they could only tell me what the tracking number already told me. So is postage customs at Prasing post office or CM airport or in Bangkok, for mail like mine from the states?
thanks in advance!

I think the Northern Mail head office is in Lampang, not sure if in coming

mail from abroad is checked at customs there or in Bangkok,

Most likely they are just looking at the DVD 's (on tv) and will forward

them when they are finished !

regards Worgeordie

Customs operates both in Bangkok and out of the airport here directly.. Depends where it clears..

DVD's are a high tax item, I used to import many and it would then add item + postage + 30% + 7% to everything.. Didnt matter if I amazon ordered 200 bucks of books (low tax) and just one DVD they would then add the cumulative 30 + 7 to everything. Had many many arguments over this.

You should be receiving the package shortly. Three months ago, I sent a package from U.S. Via USPS to a friend in CM. The box had arms boot for her son in the military. They sat in customs in Bangkok for 8-10 days and then sent to CM, with a custom's bill of around $63, which I sent to the friend via Moneygram. Good luck!

Good luck- I was sent a replacement Fitbit (electronic, like small watch with rubber strap) from the UK in late September and still no sign.

It was a free replacement from the company so no invoice which must have been confusing for customs. Dont think it will ever turn up now!

It all seems a bit arbitrary--I sent 3 boxes of definitely personal items from UK when we returned to CNX after spending a year back in England--2 boxes arrived on my doorstep within days of our arrival on our flight--the third did not show up until I received an email from DHL Bangkok saying that Customs had decided that duty was due to be paid--3500 Baht plus a fee for storage at their site--total about 4200 baht--I can't say that I had a huge problem with the rate but I am puzzled how, since the first 2 boxes had definitely not been opened, that they could determine that the third had dutiable items, [and proceeded to open it and re-seal it very badly]--maybe they have some amazing X-Ray facilty!!

If your parcel is send to customs in Chiang Mai, you would have received a letter from the Thai post informing you that your package is held at the customs department in Chiang Mai. Customs in Chiang Mai is near the airport on the same compound as Thai Airlines freight. if you haven't received a letter, your package is not at the customs department.

My box finally turned up after two weeks in customs. I went to Prasing post office and paid 1000 baht in duties, got off pretty lightly considering I had sent four other boxes over the previous few months without any duty or delays. I think the main duty was on the DVD's which were declared on the postal slip on the outside of the box. The box was unopened and everything was intact. Thanks for all your input!

I'm in Chiang Mai also. I had something shipped to me USPS and the last thing on tracking is "Your item is being processed by Customs in Thailand." This was over two weeks ago.......What's the longest wait possible (assuming it's not stolen or lost)?g processed by customs in THAILAND
