Situation in Bangkok is still under control, says Capo

BANGKOK, 15 January 2014 (NNT) -- The rally aiming to shutdown the Thai capital city has so far been peaceful, said the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) on Wednesday.

According to CAPO deputy spokesman Pol. Col. Gen. Anucha Romyanan, although the People's Democracy Reform Committee (PDRC) has set up stages in 12 spots throughout Bangkok and marched to many places on Wednesday, the situation in the city remained quite calm.

According to Anucha, most of the violent incidents happened at nights, including the throwing of explosive devices into Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's residence on Tuesday night.

The CAPO has ordered the national police office to speed up its investigation and arrest those who caused violence or assaulted the anti-government movement. It has also ordered authorities to secure every important place and residences of key government officials to prevent any possible violence.

Meanwhile, some of the PDRC members gathered in front of the National Police Bureau around noon on Wednesday. However, they just stayed outside the closed gate and took turns blasting the National Police Chief for mistakes and errors they claimed he had made.

Chaturon encounters whistle blowers

BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Education Minister Chaturon Chaisaeng was chased out by a group of protesters who blew their whistles at him as he was inspecting schools in Yannawa district Wednesday morning.

The protesters encountered Chaturon as he was in a school in Sathupradit Road. He immediately walked into his car and left the scene.

Issara Somchai, a core leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee in charge of the Lat Phrao rally site, went on stage this morning to urge protesters to move to the nearby Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to seal it off and request officials to call off their work.

A group of protesters later headed for the department for the closure mission.

Another group of PDRC protesters, led by Ravee Masmadol, went from the Energy Ministry on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road to the Huay Kwang residence of caretaker Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisarn to strengthen their pressure against the Cabinet.

They carried with them a coffin with Pongsak’s name on it and blew whistles on their arrival. They were to submit a letter to him, demanding the caretaker government’s resignation and a suspended increase in cooking gas price.

A representative received the letter on behalf of Mr Pongsak who was not at home. Dr Ravee said the group will move back to the Energy Ministry.

Public buses caught in traffic

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) has lost over Bt5.3 million in revenue in the first two days of the "Bangkok shutdown".

Nares Boonpiam, acting director of the agency that operates the metropolitan bus system, said that the shutdown has resulted in a decrease in the number of commuters.

As public buses’ commuters have to change their travelling palns as protesters close off major intersections in Bangkok, their number has fallen from 1.5 million to 1.3 million a day.

Nares added that the number of public buses including those operated by private companies also fell from over 5,500 to about 3,400-4,000 a day.

He said that the BMTA, which earns Bt9.6 million a day, lost Bt3 million in revenue on January 13 and Bt2.3 million on January 14.

Meanwhile, private companies have also lost a combined amount of Bt1 million a day.

If the shutdown continues for over a week, BMTA would need a new financial plan and probably financial assistance from the government.

Baht weakens in wake of mass rallies in BKK

BANGKOK, 15 January 2014 (NNT) - The baht currency has slightly depreciated after the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) occupied Bangkok for the third day.

Commercial banks on Wednesday reported that the Thai currency opened this morning at 32.76 baht to the U.S dollar, decreasing from 32.70 baht to the U.S. dollar yesterday afternoon. At 2 PM on Wednesday, the baht further dropped to 32.87 baht to the U.S. dollar.

The main reason the currency weakened was the PDRC’s mass rallies in many areas in Bangkok, said the banks. They also predicted that the U.S.’ economic information about retail business and the tapering the Quantitative Easing by the U.S. government on 28-28 January 2014 would affect the baht.
