Thai tourists are better prepared for overseas trips and generous in spending spree

BANGKOK, 16 Jan 2014 (NNT) – Affluent Thai people have been wiser in taking their trips abroad by planning ahead of their journey and taking along electronic devices or new communication tools, according to the Visa Global Travel Intention Survey 2013.

The survey shows that 60 percent of high-income travelers use such devices as smartphones and tablets to check emails, and 45% use various online applications to send messages during their trips. The poll also shows that 34% of the holiday makers in this group share their journey experiences by posting their photos online, while 33% surf the Internet for entertaining purposes during the trips.

53% of Thai tourists also carry some forms of camera, and 47% bring along their tablets for use during their journey, the VISA's survey said.

The three main deciding factors for Thai tourists in choosing their destinations are promotional incentives by tour agencies, weather at the time of visit and tourist attractions the destination has to offer.

The survey also shows that affluent Thai travelers have a tendency to increase their spending by up to 3 times when arriving in their destinations.

The poll also said 33% of those holiday goers spend most at retail shops, 22% on food, and 19% on other activities. 93% of Thai tourists use credit cards as means of payment at high-end restaurants and night entertainment venues, compared to only 40% of global travelers who use credit cards on the same purpose.

"The survey also shows that affluent Thai travelers have a tendency to increase their spending by up to 3 times when arriving in their destinations"

Could this not be attributed to the fact that it is probably 3 times more expensive in the places they are traveling to? Lets not forget they are on holiday and who doesn't spend more on holiday also.

No. I think it means that during their travels they don't spend a lot in airports or layovers etc but when they reach their destination that they start to spend more. Fairly simple I think.

Where would you possibly get that they think they are "far superior" from this news article? Maybe they don't have the kind of money that many of us from 1st world countries have and good jobs to come back to so they are just more careful how they travel?

Doesn't take much to get you going does it?

So this says Thais use Electronic means... DOOOH!! So does everyone. Of all the 10 Thai tourists they surveyed starting with the Politicians...

AND hows this - The three main deciding factors for Thai tourists in choosing their destinations are promotional incentives by tour agencies - So any freebies and we will go...

Now I wonder if they could fill a 737 a year with all the THAI TOURISTS?

I took my partner to Russia. thais do not need a visa to Russia. The Immigration there took over 30 minutes wondering why he did not need a Visa. Tells you how indicative it is of QULAITY THAI TOURISTS going anywhere.

And by the way, NO QUALITY THAI tourists visit my country, they go to STUDY according to my Embassy.

- Australia - So where do they go? Burma? Vietnam? Singapore?

What a load of BULL SH..T

TAT will be having kittens. All of their OWN 'high quality' tourists are going overseas to spend their money. I guess they can't find any high quality destinations in Thailand. Hope they spread the word to western tourists not to come to LoS. But think Dr Seri has that base covered laugh.png

I recall an expression - 'a sublime glimpse of the obvious'. This article sure is one of those. As already stated - where the heck is the news in this?

The same can be said of the average western grade school student's daily activity. So, what this survey is saying is that the most influential Thai tourist is equivalent to a 10 year-old western child.clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

What it doesn't say is that a vast number of those able to afford it, happen to be overseas on vacation now...odd timing

I do not think using credit cards at high end restaurants is proof of being better prepared. Using cards overseas means high charges and poor rates!

If posts here reflect the average foreigner in Thailand then it would seem we are a very insecure and low self-esteemed group.

crazy.gif.pagespeed.ce.dzDUUqYcHZ.gif to feel threatened by some non-threatening and very unsurprising stats about affluent Thais on a Thai related news forum whose purpose I would imagine, at least in part, is to educate people about Thailand. coffee1.gif.pagespeed.ce.Ymlsr09gMJ.gif

How is it possible to have managed to post +2,500 and yet know nothing about Thai behaviour and cultural ideals? The tone of the article is obvious to any who have lived and socialised with middle class Thai.

I have the dubious honour of working in a Laos hotel and see a fair number of these tourists. I find generally they are cheapskates, they bring beer & street food back to a 4 star hotel and seem to haggle over every purchase when shopping. I can always spot a Thai at breakfast by the amount they pile on their plates and by their repeated trips to the buffet :)

And of course they feel they are superior to the locals being mainly from Bangkok.

Poor tipppers by the way but quite amusing to watch :)

If you're Thai and are into global (intercontinental) travel, you're not poor by anyones standard. Remember that the well off here are very well off so it's not surprising they can spend a lot abroad and have many gadgets. Also, the well off are well educated.

It's not the same as working class people from the likes of the UK, like me, travelling about.

This is a very silly article indeed. The 'they use gadgets and cameras on holiday' made my eyes water. Also as other people have pointed out, many Thais work just to pay the basic bills, which they have to get shark loans for sometimes too. The lavish holiday experience doesn't happen to a vast section of society here, so why would I care if the smaller section uses cameras on holiday. Surely the fact that people are sitting in the dusty road because they didn't even get paid for the rice they farmed, is a more relevant issue. And that money they are waiting for, will not be spent on overseas holidays either - with or without gadgets.

And the point of this 'report' is?

When u have been in Thailand a while, work with, socialize and hang our with friends of your carefully chosen middle class Thai friends, it will become extremely clear.

Most Thai enjoy believing that Thailand is at a more progressive point than it actually is. the negatives not properly understood and comprehended by a non-Thai. Obviously if one has a smart phone, fablet and a digital camera, well then there's not really much more to social & cultural development.
