webfact
Tanzanian con-artist suspect arrested by Pattaya PolicePATTAYA: -- A 34 year-old Tanzanian suspected con-artist was arrested by Pattaya Police in Soi Buakoaw on Thursday afternoon after he was spotted by one of his alleged victims.Police arrived and arrested Mr. Gailly Sunday Mwakibinga who was then taken to Pattaya Police Station. He was spotted by one of his alleged victims, Khun Muniporn aged 54, who owns a Beer Bar close to the Maprachan Reservoir in East Pattaya. The suspect visited her bar on 13th January and spent the night there and became very friendly with the victim. He persuaded her that the time was right to exchange Thai Baht into US Dollars and she agreed to give him 300,000 Baht for the US Dollar equivalent. To raise the funds for the transaction, she borrowed 130,000 Baht against her car. This money along with 170,000 Baht she had saved was taken to a nearby Motel where she agreed to meet the suspect. When she arrived in the room, she was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance and fell unconscious. When she awoke she found the 300,000 Baht had gone along with the suspect.Full story: http://www.pattayaone.net/pattaya-news/115413/tanzanian-con-artist-suspect-arrested-by-pattaya-police/-- Pattaya One 2014-01-

OMGImInPattaya
I was expecting the "black money" scam but the spray to the face scam came totally out of left field. Not very original but points for effectiveness.

Not very original but points for effectiveness. Yes, the use of "artist" in the description con-artist, suggests a little skill or finesse. In this case there was very little art, but then it appears not much was needed. But then as Bernie Madoff (and the CEOs of most major corporations) know, there's an abundant supply of supposedly intelligent, successful people who are easily blinded by greed.
hgma
Con Artist? What is so atristic about a outright robbery and assault. No....The real con artist takes his/her time......trust and woops the money is gone before they( victims) know it and in some cases don't have a clue where to complain or file. i know some stories these artists pulled in Laos......and in the end it all comes down to........... Sex - Drugs - and Rock&Roll in Greed!

Yes I think we must read between the lines here. I suspect his being so charming and "big hearted" is why she was so eager to meet him again in his hotel room. Time Traveller
I guess all the banks and FX kiosks were closed in Pattaya that day. Or was there another reason she decided to go to a hotel room to exchange currency?

Docno
Interesting that the email alert for this story said "African con-artists and thieves keep Pattaya police busy". Seems like it was just a single individual rather than the crime wave suggested, and this case doesn't seem to have overwhelmed the police... pacovl46
Both seem to be not very smart, she for giving him her money and him for staying in Pattaya after he robbed the money! Som nam na, blackie. Have fun in prison.

Jonmarleesco
She's obviously as much to blame as the con-artist - of which Pattaya has plenty of local talent. Apart from the stupidity of being so eager to part with B300,000, including using her car as collateral, one would think she would know the THB has declined against the USD and isn't likely to go back up by much any time soon. Jonmarleesco
Of course, not very many years ago, the police were busy raiding the Bangkok offices of the perpetrators of another scam, known as boiler rooms. Most, if not all, of the victims were stupid and greedy farangs, living outside of Thailand but phoned from here with bargain share offers. Another example, and a non-Thai one, of fools... So it is the victims fault then. U r saying she deserved to be robbed because she thought she was getting a good deal. Even if she was does not warrant the victims being blamed. I see this all the time when someone gets robbed people say that the victim deserves it for being stupid. So by that assumption anyone that is stupid deserves to be robbed what twisted world this is
