Buying A House -guidance

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Next month I am finalising the purchase of a small town house for my g/f in Issan. The house was recently built as part of a large development.

She has assured me that everything is fine wrt the land ownership and 'Government Papers' but as I speak little Thai I am a bit anxious that the transaction is all above board and there are no hidden 'catches'. My g/f insists that her uncle has checked it all out, but I wonder if anyone would kindly provide me with any guidance, i.e do I need to hire a solicitor, and what technically and legally constitutes 'ownership' of a property.

Many thanks in advance for any inforamation.

Richard

As naturalpoints shouted :o , you should get a lawyer if you don't understand, but a high percentage of people don't. Questions to ask your g/f if you don't want to use a lawyer. Is there a chanote; are there any comments on it regarding liens, that is loans, leases, etc. against the property; is it in the purported owner's name (check id)?

Might be a good idea to explain to her that it is your custom to have any legal documents translated and inspected by professionals.

Her uncle may lose some face but then again her could be ripping her off too.

....and don't use HIS translator :o

We've bought quite a few properties, incl. the house we live in, in Thailand. The wife just goes along to the amphur where the house papers are kept, together with the vendor and their papers. Pays your money, and changes the ownership details. Keeps her papers. Never used solicitors and never had a prob.
