BANGKOK: -- POLICE suspect politics was the motive for the shooting attack that injured top red-shirt hard-liner Kwanchai Praipana in his home province of Udon Thani yesterday.

Kwanchai, a local radio presenter, has played an active role in mobilising supporters of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) in the Northeast.

Kwanchai was reading a newspaper in front of his home near the Khon Rak Udon group radio station at 10am when at least two assailants in a pick-up truck fired 42 bullets at him with an AK-47 assault rifle from about 100 metres outside the fence.

Udon Thani police chief Pol Maj-General Boonleu Korbangyang said the Khon Rak Udon group chairman was wounded in his right arm and leg and taken to Aek Udon Hospital. As red-shirt supporters crowded the hospital to |get updates, Kwanchai was reported to be stable and recovering. Police also set up checkpoints on a stretch of road in Nong Khai heading towards the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, to which |the suspects' truck was reportedly heading.

Boonleu said Kwanchai's house was previously attacked by two dud hand grenades.

Kwanchai had organised several movements and forums in the region to support the February 2 general election in opposition to the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC)'s demand for the resignation of the caretaker government and national reform before the election.

Kwanchai has a number of rivals, including several red-shirt groups not under his supervision, and Udon Thani politicians. He also made negative comments recently against senior military officers.

Another red-shirt hard-liner, Yossawaris Chuklom, aka Jeng Dokchik, said Kwanchai's shooting might be a result of the ongoing political conflict because Kwanchai was very vocal in his opinions.

"I want to tell those behind this attack that we are all Thais. Even though we have different political points of view, there is no need to use violence like this shooting. I think we are in 'violence mode', and even I have to be cautious from now on," he added.

Brilliant deduction Watson. Now can you tell us some we don't know. Like who did it.

But some Thai Visa experts have determined that it was a crime of passion or a bad business deal anything but politics because that could implicate the gentle peace loving Suthep and his supporters.

Personally I think I will go with the BIB on this one.

Depending on the source either 42 or 47 rounds were fired and he was only hit twice so the gunman needs remedial firearms training.

i hope who ever did this realise that they have only advanced Kwanchai's status as he will leave hospital with his wounds and the attempt on his life as badges of courage and off he'll go even more strident than ever.

Suthep has absolutely no quarrel with Kwanchai. Suthep wants the Shinawats to leave politics, he is not anti red shirts.

And Kwanchai is irrelevant, spurned by the other red leaders and sometimes by Thaksin, he is seen as a buffoon with a big mouth.

He has plenty of enemies, what better time for a rival to take a pot shot,( hopelessly amateur as it was), than during a time of national political conflict when it's easy to get fingers pointing at the 'other side'.

Very valid points.

A buffoon often shooting off his mouth like when he claimed he had 10 million red shirts to escort Thaksin across the Lao Friendship bridge back to Thailand. Often at odds against other red shirt leaders.

Additionally, a violent leader of red shirts in his own Udon Thani who led an unprovoked attack against PAD there.

Live by the sword and all that.

His enemy list is a long one.

there are many directions this can go. failing to drum up support for Thaksin and his "tiger" may result in injuries, or maybe a thai farmer is sick of his Poopy mouth, or maybe someone picked the weakest link to set an example for the rest. as for me, im not a fan of cambodians killing thais. as most people know, thaksin and hunsen are buddies. just look what hes doing in cambodia.... doesnt it seem.... eerily familiar?

Probably over a business deal. Payment made and received to deliver an agreed number of people to a certain location by a certain date, but that did not happen. Recalling events in Bangkok before Xmas...

Both sides, again, unsure who is trigger happy, but a conclusion that is hard to refute, being:

Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! Danger!

To discuss what to do with the rice mountain? PS I thought the mysterious guys in black were no longer mysterious but active policemen. Maybe there are one or two in the picture off-duty so to speak.

Personally I think I will go with the BIB on this one.

And just as easily implicate PTP, his red shirt rivals, the UT MPs or the military he's pissed off. Enemies are often much closer to home, and often '"related".

But as a trained police officer you would know that, and never jump to a convenient or biased conclusion would you?

Which force is it again?

What is it the red lovers keep saying every time the protestors are attacked...?...oh yeah, he shot himself to try and get sympathy for his side - I don't believe that any more now than I did any time you red sheeple said that over the last month....
