when I was a kid about 6 or 7 years old I heard about a place called Thailand, Unfortunately all I could hear was Toyland (there was a chain of toy stores in Australia called toyland, my god when that toy catalog came in the mail it was like porn.) My God, I just couldnt believe it, just like in a fairy tale... a land of toys!

most people these days probably still think similar except it just invokes feelings of beaches, beers and relaxation.

Nope!

It is still "Toyland"

You are just older now and playing with different toys.

I'm not a political guy but I'm originally from Taiwan, and now working in Thailand with my own family business here. I used to studied in the US and worked in California for over 4 years.

What made me embarrassed is that almost all my friends in US did not really know about Taiwan, and very often mixed up the Taiwan and Thailand.

Gonna get worse this weekend when CNN will air a special investigation documentary on the plight of the Thai Fishermen with accusations of kidnapping torture, held prisoner and murder of workers being tossed overboard from the fishing vessels. CNN says Thailand is one of the biggest fish exporters in the world.

Yes, CNN, with all of its 970 viewers will make a HUGE splash in world news.

I am american in bkk. Truth is, americans dont know much of anything going on anywheres outside the usa!! So we cant use usa as a guide. ? its jyst true!

Speaking for yourself? I sure hope this does not apply to all Americans. Thats just totally brainless to say something like that. Most every American I know here or back home is very much educated.

Always some moron trying to make us look stupid...but it comes from jealousy...

Not going to show you the statistics..look them up.

and next time do not include "all americans" have some gonads and speak for your own ignorance.

Tell us Mr Smarty....where that 970 viewers came from. Please tell me you actually visit these people to check if they are watching CNN.

Not such a bright comment. Low numbers like that, and CNN would fold under.

Get with the program...and pull out real numbers.

If it's any consolation: They constantly mix-up Switzerland and Sweden.

The knowledge that Canada and Mexico are neighbors, makes everyone a geographical expert instantly.

To remember: This is the same country that fights wars (Police Actions) around the globe and flew to the moon.

Cheers.

You have other issues to worry about if you are so easily embarrassed !

Have you ever lived in the UK reading and hearing about OAPs dying in their homes because they can't afford to heat them? Yes, I'm embarrassed to come from a country full of rich MPs claiming for all those expenses, even doughnuts. I kid you not.

I hardly doubt Thailand is becoming the laughing stock of the rest of the world because, outside of Thailand - nobody gives a rat @ss about Thailand.

Unless of course a celeb comes thru and has a photo op with an endangered species.

Seriously, if it were not for TV (and watching Thai TV over the internet) - I would still think Thailand was still all peaches and roses right now.

Yes, this happens a lot. It even happened on a TV show recently with a talk show host named Conan, who assumed a guest was talking about Taiwan when the guest mentioned how cute Thai babies were. Americans also get Chinese and Japanese mixed-up, as well as Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. At least Thais get it right when they say farangs, instead of trying to guess the nationality.

I had friends contact me with concern recently and offers of accommodations back there if we needed to evacuate.

I sent them the dancing navy video and told them this is what the armed forces are up to currently.

One of my customer thinks Taiwan and Thailand is the same country.

The nice lady in the bank in Farangland, asked me how good I can speak Chinese now as I live in Thailand.

Another customer who knows that I always do the R&D work over public holidays, gave me a ton of work to do over the Chinese New Year holidays.

Beside the bank lady, the other two hold university degrees and are in management positions.....

For most people Thailand is just an exotic country somewhere in Africa or Caribbean somewhere near Cuba and Jamaica....

And off course they are from saharat america ...
