DTAC TriNet to kick off 4G service in April

BANGKOK: -- DTAC TriNet is expected to launch fourth-generation long-term evolution (LTE) wireless broadband service on its 2.1-gigahertz spectrum in April, said a source in the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.

DTAC TriNet, a unit of Total Access Communication (DTAC), won approval for the 4G launch on Wednesday from the NBTC telecom committee.

The source said the company would launch the 4G service on 200 sites in Bangkok and another 100 sites in some major provinces.

DTAC TriNet is one of the three holders of NBTC licences to operate wireless broadband on the 2.1GHz spectrum. The other two are Advanced Wireless Network (AWN) of Advanced Info Service and Real Future of True Corp.

Real Future is currently the only provider of commercial 4G service in Thailand. It introduced both 3G and 4G commercially last May on its 2.1GHz spectrum. It currently offers 4G on around 700 LTE sites in Bangkok, and aims to have 1,200 sites in operation by end of the current quarter.

DTAC has said there is broad demand from its subscribers for 4G, which promises enhanced mobile Web access, Internet-protocol telephony, high-definition and three-dimensional TV and other improvements over 3G. DTAC projected the number of its subscribers with 4G-capable devices to reach about a million by last December, and the company wants to respond to this pent-up demand.

Meanwhile AWN currently has around 17 million 3G subscribers, while DTAC TriNet has about 13 million and Real Future 7 million.

The telecom committee on Wednesday also approved DTAC TriNet's request for 4.4 million additional mobile-phone numbers and Real Future's request for 4.6 million. Last week the committee approved the allocation of 9.9 million additional numbers to AWN.

As a result of these approvals, AWN has a total of 24 million mobile-phone numbers, while DTAC TriNet has 12.4 million and Real Future 14.6 million.

The committee also approved the AWN request for 1,000 numbers for its fixed telephone network in Greater Bangkok and another 1,000 numbers for its fixed network in Chon Buri.

I've read through quite a lot of forum posts from last year involving complaints about DTAC network performance, but my personal experience so far (ranging from Chiangmai to Bangkok to Korat) suggests that whatever problems they've had, they've cleared up - the DTAC network has been more reliable and better performing than AIS by far.

When dtac came up with this this TriNet thing I went so see the dtac shop in Lamphun and asked if chances are things getting better. The girl behind the counter looked into a computer together with her colleague and I never forget the look I received:

BUT! This is Thailand and my SIM card was exchanged ...........for the unreachable.

well, maybe they felt that since you'd taken the trip down to them, you shouldn't leave empty handed... too many times alas I've also learnt that things would've been better off left well enough alone...

I've thumbed through the "What is this TriNet thing anyway?" thread and basically it seems to me more about the parent companies needing to migrate people onto their longer-lasting bandwidth concession than anything technical (though yes the 2.1GHz thing is useful for more foreign phones).

I'm sure the benefits of living where you are outweigh the horrors of slow networking?

I like Dtac trinet. It basically is the only network in Thailand that has integrated all their separate networks and works seamlessly . Unlike for example True were you get the R for roaming when you go back on the older infrastructure ..

I get R in Android telephone in Truemove as well as Dtac, even with AIS GSM network on AIS 3G simcard.

Of course all work fine using an iPhone.

Dtac 2100 mhz coverage is far behind of AIS and now they invest on 4G? Thats another joke after True's 4G attempt on very limited coverage in BKK.

What they expect us to do with 3-4gb max speed and 64-384kbit speed afterwards on 4G?

I didn't even expect 3G. Just dtac promissed to deliver 2 years ago.

Are they going to do this without a few years of protracted legal wrangling with suing and counter suing and threatening to impeach the telecoms committee and redividing up the licences and payoffs to the various key figures and companies involved? Hardly seems like the Thai way. Not a good example of Thainess to just launch 4G without any fuss.....

my 3G here in phuket run very well 10-13mbps down and 2-3mbps upload with Happy Dtac , i just change 1 year ago from 1-2 call to happy.. happy dtac is much better here in bang tao

Unfortunately the "E" (Edge) low speed data connection symbol is still very common when a person gets away from the main roads and cities in Thailand. Heck, I live in western Bangkok and only get an Edge connection sometimes...and I ain't using no cheap phone as I use a Samsung S4. And even when you do get a 3G or H symbol the speed indicating a higher speed connection that speed may be only a little better than Edge. Mobile data connections "as a whole" are getting better in Thailand no doubt, but for many it's still the Land of Edge.

I'm really happy with my Truemove-H LTE speed. Coverage area is getting larger day by day.

FYI. Dtac 3G Coverage area is really bad in Thailand.

You guys (who use dtac) should considering move to AIS 3G 2100MHz or Truemove-H 3G 850MHz. (Much better coverage area)

For some of you who got 'R' from Truemove-H. I guess, because your mobile device doesn't support 3G 850 MHz.

I must admit i use DTAC and they are not so good, i get around 4mb in thailand and 1.5 -2mb international and also when you go out of a city it gets really bad, really bad and did i metntion it took them 8 months to change me over!

Perhaps before DTAC kicks off this service they could kick out the door forcibly with a boot up the arse the IDIOT who designed their web site with the ridiculous hard to read fonts! Almost built to drive people to other service companies. Just saying.

I am 10km outside Pattaya and the sim is in an aircard, so no configuration possible, and is there for the past 2 years in the exact same location. It's by the way an aircard provided by Dtac.

During weekdays I may get 2Mb download on a lucky day, during the weekend the light on the aircard switches to green ( indicates Edge signal ). Has nothing to do with extra load during the weekends as I'm far from the tourist area..

My signal is fine as I'm close to the signal tower.

Is this why my air-card service has gone to crap this past week? I get kicked off about every 5 minutes now. Some of the reasons I'm getting from Customer Service are way out the realm of professionality and border on harassment. Should start a new thread
