East Asian tourist numbers plunge 20.43%: TAT

BANGKOK, 8 April 2014 (NNT) —The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has revealed that the overall number of tourists from East Asia has diminished significantly. However it still expects 5.4-million Chinese tourists to choose Thailand as their travel destination.

Srisuda Wanapinyosak, TAT’s executive director of East Asia Regions, reported that the number of tourists from China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong dropped by 20.43% to 1.18-million during the first two months of 2014.

During Jan.-Feb., the number of Chinese tourists was 636,000, a decline of 20.88%, affected directly by the emergency decree that then applied in Bangkok and the prolonged political turmoil.

Meanwhile, the lower numbers are in line with the data previously reported by the Department of Tourism that showed that in March, the number of tourists travelling to Thailand was 2.1-million, a decrease of 9% compared to the previous year.

so Chinese visitors decline by 20,88% but TAT expect to have 5.4 millions tourists from China ..... I love the figures from TAT ....

The tourist fraternity might just be starting to get picky in their destinations , the international employment isn't all that great and of course you have all that pesky trouble down in Thailand , honestly the only parts of EAsia for a family are Singapore , Malaysia, HK (with face masks), parts of Indonesia and worn torn Thailand , take your pick.

At least when the Chinese tourist numbers drop the percentage of high end tourist goes up.

So it's not all bad news. smile.png

Do they ever go a week without making up some imaginary numbers? Lord I hope not.........TAT=SHAT

Interesting thread here on Wiki... 20% of foreigners account for the sex tourism. that makes a hell of a lot of Thais...

And Domestic tourism is calculates into the figures of 22million so not really accurate. if Wiki is accurate that is.

Watch the numbers fall even moreso next year folks as there is LESS money now than a year ago for spending. THAILAND is no longer affordable for a holiday. It is cheaper to go to Spain again and Greece and if you wnat an Asian holiday... Vietnam and Indonesia are vying hard for the money.

With those nasty Ruskies having 25% less to spend because of those nasty Europeans placing sanctions on Russia I doubt if condos in Pattaya will be worth more than a few Thousand baht next year.

Try a russian, he will want DISCOUNT! :)

One more indicator of harder times to come. The golden goose of tourism is about to fly to another venue where it's species is off the menu called greed and xenophobia.

What about Vietnam!!!??? Last time I was there in December it was full of families having a great time - lovely people -safe-good food- inexpensive and lots to see and do and the beaches are 2000% cleaner and more beautiful than most of Thailand's!!!
