The hard disk on my desktop has just crashed, with a nasty ticking sound.

I bought a new one and fitted it.

I noticed that the old disk has a 3 year guarantee, and I only bought it 2 years ago.

So I have returned it to the shop where I bought it.

No problem there, "wait 3 weeks."

My question is:

Can I expect a full guarantee of 3 years on the new disk, or only the remaining year?

Any useful comments or experiences welcome.

Thanks

In 8 weeks they will have a new one. Perhaps.

The guarantee on the hard disk will last until the end of your original warranty. Or in the case of this period being shorter than 3 months, then you will receive a 3 month warranty.

This tends to be the case with Maxtor and other large HD manufacturers.

Smaller companies are not so generous - e.g. Nikimi etc

Often you can check the status of your drive's warranty on-line. Maxtor for example offer the service here:

https://www.maxtor.com/en/support/service/rma/create/

Often before returning a drive to them you will have to run diagnostic software on the drive - this will then allow an RMA to be created.

I have returned drives this way as you do not get the lies etc that you experience in the shops!

Some manufacturers will ship an advance replacement if you provide a credit card number for surety of returning the faulty item.
