Nurak elected as new Constitutional Court president

BANGKOK: -- Nurak Mapraneet was elected as the new Constitutional Court president on Wednesday, replacing Charoon Inthacharn.

Charoon stepped as the court president ahead of his mandatory retirement at 70. However, he did not resign as a Constitutional Court judge and he will remain a judge until he officially retires on Thursday.

Nurak received six votes while two judges abstained.

Charoon became a Constitutional Court judge under the quota of the Supreme Administrative Court judges. The Supreme Administrative Court will be asked to select a new judge to replace Charoon.

Nurak, 65, graduated from Thammasat's University Faculty of Law. He's a former Supreme Court judge, has served as head of the Juvenile and Family Court Region 7, and as senior Appeals Court judge, of the Appeals Court as well as deputy chief justice of the Appeals Court.

Following the 2006 coup, Nurak was a member of the National Assembly.
