Interpol to be asked to help track down pirates who hijacked Thai tanker

CHONBURI, 4 June 2014 (NNT) – Police in Chonburi are working to finalize their case documents on the hijacking of the Orapin 4 tanker, so Interpol can be asked to help track down the pirates who took off with close to 4 million liters of diesel oil.

Ship captain Thiwa Sama and 5 other crew members were questioned further by police on Tuesday, after the captain gave his account of the ordeal with the pirates on Monday. Investigators said they did not find anything suspicious as the accounts of all crew members matched. The crew are not suspected of having involvement in the robbery.

Police expect evidence to be compiled by this week, which will allow the attorney general to send the case to Interpol and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Contact with the Orapin 4 was lost last Wednesday and the ship was missing until Sunday, when Navy patrols spotted it off the coast of Chonburi. All crew members are safe after the reported run-in with pirates in the Strait of Malacca.

How long do we have to wait for the police to ask Interpol to help arrest the missunderstood fugitive in Dubai? The guy already is convicted by the court so the necessary evidence is there.

The Dems screwed that up initially by never asking Interpol to issue a Red Notice and of course there was no way a PTP govt would even consider such a move.

Maybe Gen. Prayuth will decide to leave it alone meantime and concentrate on stability.

While they are at it, there is a pirate camel herder that needs picking up as well..thumbsup.gif

Interpol being asked to intervene again in Thai affairs. presumably the Thais will analyze and release details to Interpol on how the pirates managed to offload 4 million liters of diesel fuel in the open sea. No Thai air force jets cruised around the gulf or the Indian ocean to have a look for a missing tanker for four days. It must be similar to the Thai radar checking of MH370 crossing over their land and/or border.

They missed out the 'allegedly'.

It's a good thing Interpol is run by farang and not Thais. If it was managed by Thais, the paperwork and delays and mis-communications would render it non-functioning.

Wow! Your ascerbic wit is so original, and your observations quite unique.

You spelt "herder" incorrectly . . . the first 4 letters are incorrect . . . it should begin with the sixth letter of the alphabet . . .

Also the pirates have to go to port somewhere, you are talking big boats here.

Surely countries would be monitoring their borders etc.

I don't why it is but every time I see headlines about pirates I always imagine them like something out old pirate movies with the old skull and crossbones flag.

I watched captain Phillips and being based on a true story it just shows how well equipped and prepared these guys are.

NO, they don't actually.....They stay in open waters(High Seas) fulltime....

How do they realize a profit for the heist? The vessel they put the cargo into would need fuel that they did not on this occasion appear to take.

If the ship was taken when in Indonesian waters

WHY did the captain sail back to Chonburi to report the hijacking?

I would assume Singapore would have been closer or am I too smart for my own good?

The government at the time rally tried, but gave up after Interpol asked for completed forms in triplicate with passport copies, recent pictures and a hand-drawn map to his residence...

At least we know now, where they are hiding the missing rice :-D
