NBTC set to pay 427 million baht to air World Cup matches on free TV

BANGKOK, 12 June 2014 (NNT) – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has agreed to pay RS International 427 million baht to secure rights to air World Cup matches on free TV.

NBTC Secretary-General Thakorn Tantasit said the board voted 6 to 1 to use part of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund to purchase the broadcast rights at a meeting on Thursday.

RS had earlier requested a sum of 766.5 million baht from the NBTC as compensation for the broadcasting rights.

Mr. Thakorn said the meeting did not discuss compensation for members of the public who have already secured RS set top boxes to watch the tournament and that all inquiries on the matter should be directed to RS.

The NBTC is set to hold talks with free TV broadcasters about relaying the World Cup broadcasts soon.

CTH pay about $264,000 for each Premier League match.

By my calculations, the government are paying about $203,000 for each World Cup match.

So probably about what RS paid. They've still made some other money out of it, especially as it happened so late.

Poor True.

Meanwhile, Abhisit is kicking himself, while pouring another sherry.

Why did I not think of this? he mutters as he wipes off the sherry from his face - as he's not really good at multi tasking.

For once in my life, I could have won an election! I could have become PM without that pesky Suthep arranging it for me.

And to think I was born in the UK where they invented that silly game, - fortunately they also invented sherry.

Also meanwhile, Thaksin is looking forward to the Qatar Corruption Cup, while pouring another sherry.

Why "poor True"? They did a tidy last minute deal to get all 64 matches on their HD channels. I would imagine they've gained a fair number of subscribers and kept more that otherwise were thinking of going.

Will most likely hurt future/long term broadcasts of this nature as companies will be afraid of securing rights only to be overridden by the govt which greatly reduces the company's planned profit. And I guess it could even make the owners of the events gun-shy of even offering broadcasts rights in Thailand. 427 million baht to provide football fans some free happiness---but it ain't free to the country as taxpayer money is being used. Oh well...a decision made at well above my paygrade.

I am looking forward to the commercial breaks.

Ok, no foreign languages here, as per TV rules.

In English the comment was: Bread and Games.

Football is a western corrupted game and culture, not suitable for Thailand.

Football should be discourage, and Thailand should promote Sepak Takraw.

Not everybody is sharing the happiness then?

Prefer rugby myself.

Thanks for being helpful (no sarcasm at all). The actual translation is Bread and Circuses.

You are speaking French in England? I always wondered why you built the Chunnel...the old animosity is still there. Insert tongue in cheek here.

They are! Dieu et mon droit and all that, weird for a german family, isn't it?

But I do not want to derail this tread, so let's go back to football & corruption.
