Latex mattress compared to other mattresses

Need to buy a king size bed. I like the idea of just buying the bed frame and using a Latex mattress. Would like to hear from anyone out there who has a Latex mattress etc..

I see you can order straight from the Bangkok manufactures. I would actually like to check out the mattress type first. Is there a place in Chiangmai that sells them? Also pillows.

I have pretty painful arthritis and I used just a latex topper with no mattress for a few months and I was fine. I eventually put it on some box-springs to get it off the ground, but did not really need it.

They have them at every shop that sells beds, at least the bigger ones - I bought one at HomePro, another one at Robinson, and I saw one at Central, too.

So yeah latex mattresses are out there. Shop around for prices. All these stores have Central-like margins so it's best to wait for the "sale" when they come down to market rate at 50% off or so. Latex is manufactured in Thailand's south and you could probably get it direct from the manufacturer too. The thing is though the material has a certain market value - similar to other commodities, e.g. Oil, Gold, etc - so it's not going to be a whole lot cheaper from the factory. Factory produces it and sells it at market rates.

I don't think you need a super thick one - the thicker the latex the more expensive. 10cm should do it. I have one that's... I don't know, 18 cm and King size and the problem is that it is so heavy you need 4 men to lift it. Not exaggerating - two people can't do it.

PS: A latex topper feels quite different from an actual latex mattress. Then again some sleep on a wooden plank and are fine. So it all depends. Latex mattresses are all different too, there's lots of different ways to use latex, and lots of different grades.

I have used a Latex topper feels quite different from an actual latex mattress.

I found it good and soft

But

I have a high body temperature.

So it was no good for me

I was Hot all night.

So had to stop

So i could get a good sleep

Just my use of the Latex Topper

Thought that buying a latex mattress would be the answer to my infrequent aching lower back, but it wasn't to be. This after spending a small fortune on it, so gave it away and hunted round for an alternative.

For my money a "Sealy" mattress is one of the best around and I have seen them on sale in Homepro at a 50% discount.........from time to time.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic as not about Latex but it is about mattresses and may help someone I hope.

Today, I have just tried out at the store (not slept on) the mattress I had made to standard uk double of 4'6'', which to my mind is more suited to small rooms where space is at a premium. Box Springs, firm but not too firm, and cost me 5900 which seemed a very good price for a quality made to measure product.

Time will tell I guess....

Does anyone else experience latex mattresses as being too hot due to insulation properties? Closed cell foam can't breath as a standard mattress does.

In the last year I bought a top of the line latex mattress and within 6 months gave it to a friend. US$3,000 - 97,000 bht. It was very well made with a beautiful cover and all, but...

Then I went out and bought the top of the line Sealy box spring and mattress for $2,000 - 65,000 bht. It is absolutely wonderful.

I also ditched the hot foam pillows and bought genuine goose down pillows - heaven.

No on latex being too hot - and I am very sensitive to heat - but I do use aircon during the hot times of the year, so maybe that is why it does not bother me? Anyway, I have never noticed it at all.

In my professional work I spend a lot of time assessing beds and mattresses for people with disabilities..

latex? waste of money, particularly in Chiang Mai

I suggest a standard firm mattress on a solid base. Buy some good pillows and best of all the Thai bolster so you can give yourself lots of positional options while you are in bed.

Latex mattresses are not a good idea for people with severe back problems as:

1. They tend to be hot as they conserve heat.

2. By their very nature they impede easy movement, they tend to 'hold' the person.

For a person with a severe back problem there are few answers other than to sleep on a firm mattress and by using firm pillows and the Thai bolster provide as many positional options as possible.

Remember a person during sleep changes position about every 20 minutes - this is entirely sub concious. For a person with a back condition that can mean waking up in pain at regular intervals thus aggravating the condition. Using a few pillows can provide support as the person moves

One old method was to place a rolled up blanket down one edge of the bed under the sheet to provide a simple back rest.

Latex mattress seems a good idea when you first lie on it, but not for sleeping on if you have a severe back problem. Mind you they are jolly good if you are in rocket and experience high g forces for a few minutes

If the problem is really severe consideration can be for an adjustable medical bed but that is outside the discussion

A strange job? Yes I also help people with setting up hospital in the home, helping disabled people live independently at home and other strange activities.

The fact is, that many people LOVE sleeping on latex, and get just a good a sleep if not better than sleeping on a tempur postupedic, without having to cough up 65K.

I am not sure if having fairly bad arthritis from head to toe is considered "disabled", or not, but I am always in some pain and the latex topper that I bought a few years ago makes it a lot easier for me to sleep comfortably.

There is a store that sells them in the Night Bazaar. in the same building with McDonalds and Dukes.

Tonight I went and checked out this store as it gave me a legitimate reason to exceed my self-imposed Dukes limit of once a week...

They do not sell any mattresses... just the latex toppers and pillows...

Their 7.5cm king topper they said was made in Thailand cost 26,000 baht...

Guess that's a good deal in the Night Bazaar coffee1.gif

I have just moved into a Condo on a 9 month contract while I build my new house. The king size bed mattress is as hard as rock. So I went out to find a cheap topper for the mattress. Homepro sold me a 4cm 'european latex' topper for 3,100 baht. Seems to be ok. That will do me until I buy a new King Size Bed with either a 15cm latex mattress or a spring mattress with a 7.5cm topper.
