At the Ram in Bangkok, it ranges from B200 to B500!

What pisses me off with Ram is that, for in-patients, they send in doctors, each one for a visit about 3 minutes and charges you B300 each. It cost my MIL B150,000 for staying in the hospitl for a week from a dog bite. She lived in a private room next to my FIL who stayed there for 3 months at a cost of B900,000.

Perhaps, that's why their stock has gone from about B10 in the 90's to about B2,000 presently. Am I glad that I own some hospital stocks from the experience! The new hospital addition acquired less than a year ago between 19 and 21 is now 29.75 after a dividend of B0.63 was paid. Frankly, I have never seen that hospital and don't know much about the hospital either except it's in Chonburi. I luck out I guess.

I need a correction for my last post. My eye doctor specialist at the Ram in Bangkok charged me B600 when I bumped my head on the door at home after having too much drink!

For starters, I take a look at WebMD, and a good Pharmacist is worth their weight in gold. They don't need to fill hospital beds or pay interest to GE Capital. I showed a young, pretty pharmacist my poison ivy last Summer in Phayao. Medicine was 30 thb, and it was completely gone in 3 days. But then again, 300 thb to see a specialist is amazingly cheap by US standards, and wouldn't pay your parking charges at quite a few facilities....

How much for a check up with the cardiologist? I got one at Suwan Dok on the 13 floor sorry [about the spelling] and it cost me 4,001 baht. Yes that was a 1 at the end. At the same time I got a chest X ray along with a pulmonary test and about a 15 minute consult for 325 baht. Just remembered that included some kind of test where they drew some thing out of the back of my hand.

That was a few years ago that I had the cardio workup and will have to try and find my old bills. I know a full stress test and evaluation was around 3000 Baht. Seem to remember the full check up with ecg, xrays, blood workup, BFM, etc was less than that. But again, that was a while ago and prices probably increased since then.

I've been to Ram many times and have never felt rushed or pressured by the doctor or staff to leave the consultation room until all my concerns and questions had been answered. I would say my consultations have ranged from 10 - 20 minutes.

This thing about prices at CM Ram is a well worn subject, but from a number of recent (fortunately minor) experiences where I have used other hospitals, in my view you get just as good treatment, sometimes even with the same specialist/ doctor, at other hospitals in Chiang Mai.

I needed a course of physio, used Rajavej, half the price, excellent service (my physio used to be physio to the German Gymnastics Team). For ear wax clearance, McCormick, excellent and fast treatment, again, way less than Ram prices. A good friend of mine needed a major knee replacement surgery a year ago so shopped around for prices. The same surgeon turned up at two different hospitals, and said to my friend, do you want me to do it here or at Ram for many thousands of baht more?!......true story, and a "no brainer" really !!

I have found both Rajavej and McCormick to be clean, efficient and not expensive at all, and in both cases significantly cheaper than Ram.

Find out the name of the specialist and make the appointment at his clinic or one of the cheaper hospitals he works at. I will have a knee replacement at some point in time,I went to the Drs. office he operates at 3 hospitals Rajvit will be 200,000, Suan Dock will be 250,000 and Ram 300,000, I guess you can guess where I will have the surgery.

Had my hip replaced in September. I asked the doctor for the price and he could not be exact. He figured around 200,000 at Rajavej. He figured around 350,000 at Ram. Both hospitals where he can work at.

I got it at Rajavej for 183,000 baht all in. I had the card that gives a 10% off on room and medication saved me 2,000 baht.

Interesting price comparisons.

I had my heart checked up a few years ago also. As I said 4,001 baht. When I had my hip replaced in September the Doctor was quoting roughly 350,000 baht at Ram 275,000 at Suwan Dok , and 200,000 at Rajavej. Seemed kind of funny to me that Suwan Dok would cost more but now I see that in some cases that is indeed the fact.

Oscar2, you seem a polite person and did not try to ridicule me even though it's quite obvious that I was a litte high on acohol the other night. So, I did this for you that RAM is indeed trading at the B2,000 like I said. Witness herein on last Friday's closing:

RAM certainly has modern equipment , so do hospitals like Sripat, Suak Dok, Nakornping., etc.

I think it's important to find a conscientious doctor, like hellodolly once said! Doctors here nowadays function more like a business than giving professional care with a personal touch!

Looks like he was referring to Chiang Mai Ram stocks specifically and not the Ramkhamhaeng group in Bangkok. Chiang Mai Ram - 182.50

I did make a post on CMR, but it didn't come on for some reason!

I've been pounding myself for selling most of my CMR, acquired in the 30's and 40's, when VIBHA gor involved in it. I couldn't understand the deal. Now I hold only a few thoudand shares but hopefuly will make up on the other new addition!

Stock, schmock! Private hospitals are generally more expensive than others. Is that a surprise?

Some hospitals in Chiang Mai, are trying to get a piece of the action, including the vaunted Sripat Clinic at Maharaj as well as Rajavej. And there is even a NEW large hospital (on the Superhighway) called, I believe, Bangkok Hospital, to service the increasing nervous elderly retired foreign population retiring to Chiang Mai with some cash or insurance policies in hand.

Things, they are achanging! Is that a Bob Dylan song? Hellllooooo!

The aged close-to-the-budget expats in residence, so many of whom seem to post here, better sober up very soon recognizing their stark reality or change their metaphysical view: No, you will not live forever, and other people here are not going to pay for you to try to!

Otherwise, keep it simple: Yes, private hospitals cost more than others, and, among private hospitals, some, seeking increasing market share, will cost less than others. So, what's all the chat chit about 500 bhat here or a thousand bhat there for this or that consultation? If you are having difficulty handling that sort of range of costs, then you you shouldn't be here; you belong in some supportive national health care system back where you came from.

All around I've had good experience with Chiang Mai Ram, the dental department in particular, but have also consulted with a excellent orthopedic surgeon as well as doing a full cardio exam.

But just yesterday I had my eyes checked and there was a brand new, inexplicable 'hospital fee' of 850 baht, in addition to the checkup, which was 880 baht.

Is this just an example of corporate crooks picking farangs pockets when they can? Never seen it before, and the cashier wasn't able to explain it.

I have an appt with a dermatologist next week, but if this is something they've started doing, I'll cancel and go elsewhere.

I'm used to paying 60bht to see a doctor at Thai government hospitals or 200bht at a private clinic.

I don't mind paying, but I do mind paying more because I have white skin.

That's the normal cost for private treatment.

You're wrong.

Any foreigner, Thai in the company of a foreigner, or person with foreign surname gets charged double (or more).
