Poll supports vote buyers be banned from running in election for life



BANGKOK: -- NIDA poll revealed that the majority of people agreed to ban vote buying politicians from running in elections for life.

The poll was conducted from 1,269 people from all walks of life, all levels of education and occupations scattering in all regions of the country during June 20-21 through systematic random sampling method.

The topic of the poll is corruption and election.

On a question of how to resolve the problem of vote buying in elections, 38.79% proposed longer imprisonment terms and election ban for life for those found guilty, while 28.61% said their canvassers who help to facilitate vote buying should get longer imprisonment terms, and 13.14 advised that election candidates must declare the money source used for election campaign, and l must declare their assets before and after elections.

9.24% said election committee members must not be government officials, and must not have registered households in the province where election is held.

6.41% want the government to shoulder travel cost to the polling stations, while 2.2% wanted higher penalties on both the candidates and canvassers

On a question of how to resolve corruption among politicians and government officials, 24.93% proposed triple value of assets they obtained from corruption be seized, while 23.36% said corruption cases must have no statute of limitations,and 13.49% supported asset declaration of all levels of government officials on yearly basis.

The numbers and percentages involved do not facilitate a conclusion.

Incredible that they had to have a poll to find out what the populace think about vote buying! maybe it's because most thai's see nothing wrong with corruption as long as they get a share!

I trust there were no incentives made to those polled!

since when does 38.79% outweigh 61.21% ? 492 out of 1269 is classed as a majority?? Am I missing something here? or is Thai calculations done differently than English ones?

Why do they never show the questions, to see how they're worded, or if they're leading questions either?

I wonder how many people they asked who actually received their money to vote. If you want a better answer, head up into Issan and the red villages and ask the questions

1. If you were offered payment for a vote, would you accept it?

2. If you were offered a payment to vote, would you report that canvasser to the EC if the opportunity was given to you ?

The only people they needed to canvas were the majority of voters in the Northeast who seem to determine the outcome of 'free' elections. Their votes will continue to be bought, albeit by more subtle means. Those voters in better financial situations can't fathom selling their votes for a measly 300 baht. For them, it's the cost of a few cups of coffee and a piece of pastry. However, that amount is very tempting to a poor farmer or laborer who needs to work an entire day for that salary.

If they are truly serious about ending vote buying, then improve the economic situations of all the citizens throughout the country. As long as there is widespread poverty there will be those tempted by corruption.

Totally understand the point you make about the seller being banned for life.

But if you ban people for life for selling their vote, then effectively they have become marginalized from the political domain - which you may well say is a case of tough luck?

The problem is once people become marginalized and have no voice, they tend to become more radical. People with radical ideas tend to take more extremist views, which often leads to violence and in some cases deaths.

I think most people who sell their vote do so out of poverty, which stems from social inequality and lack of opportunities. The simplest way to reduce vote selling is a) reduce poverty - a man with a full stomach is less likely to sell something he values - and have an effective deterrent system - such as a 50'000 baht fine and withdrawal of voting rights for the next election only.

An effective political system needs to be as inclusive as is possible for a long as possible.

The buyer should definitely be banned for life from ever running from office - but not from voting - along with a much larger fine

I see your point. But when you sell your vote, you simply work against democracy which is a reason for lifetime ban. And I know enough people who have their expensive mobile phones but take the money. So it is not poverty.

But you are right on the extremist risks. Withdraw the rights for say 5 years, huge fee. And maybe a special collection law that they can take just everything in your possession, so the usual tricks of not having anything because everything belongs to the wife/brother etc. doesn't work.

Can we put this argument to bed once and for all. Vote buying does little to nothing when we are talking about election results. I know you facist yellows hang onto this theory to support your demonization of the PTP and all associated. I thought it was time to air this quote again which states that the Democrats spent more money at the last election and realised it was futile because they still lost it by 100 + seats. The Democrat Party has systematically been the largest culprit when it comes to trying to buy success. They admitted to spending more than PTP at the 2011 and still lost it by a bus ride.How unpopular were the likes of Suthep and Abhisit back then. Vote buying no longer matters if the Junta goes forward with eliminating political parties from all aspects of Thai society.

With no political parties there is no political differences, no electioneering, and no vote buying. In fact there would be little reason to waste the nation's resources to hold voting at all. The government can just fill vacant positions by a Selection Committee. If there is voting, there might instead be a slate of government approved, politically-nuetral candidates selected for each position and you can vote "yes" or "no;" a "yes" vote would be placed under the supervision of the Election Commission in Box A and a "no" vote would be placed in Box B. The process might look a lot like the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (aka North Korea).
