Court-martial extends detention of ‘Bor Kor Lai Jud’ despite previous bail

BANGKOK, 4 July 2014 (NNT) – The military court has approved the extension of Red Sunday Group leader Sombat Boonngamanong’s custody for 12 more days although the activist will be immune to the order due to his previously granted bail.

As his second round of detention was becoming expired on July 5, Mr Sombat, aka Bor Kor Lai Jud, and his attorney reported to the court-martial to hear further rulings. During the session, police investigators proposed that a third round of detention be given to Mr Sombat as the interrogation of witnesses and collection of evidence had yet to be completed.

As a result, the court agreed to the proposal, giving the green light to another 12 days of custody for the activist, to be effective during July 6-17.

However, since Mr Sombat had been granted temporary release on July 1 on a 600,000-baht bail, he was allowed to go home. According to his attorney, he will, in the meantime, need to abide by the bail conditions, which require him to abstain from political activities and to seek permission should he wish to travel abroad.

Mr Sombat was apprehended and taken into custody for his defiance of the National Council for Peace and Order’s summons as well as provocation of social unrest and computer-related crimes.
